The new 3.x firmware allows potential attackers to become any user (even "admin") bypassing the authentication. Exploits are available.

All users of devices running a 3.x firmware should make sure the WebUI is not accessible from insecure networks (such as the Internet) until this vulnerability is fixed.

I have a client that is trying to use a N8800, but they're having trouble keeping it on-line.

The current issue is that the SMB shares, along with the Web interface and SNMP all fail, although the iSCSI targets stay on-line. This seems to happen most often during times of heavy I/O, such as during nightly backup. Actually, the Web interface is responsive long enough to prompt for login, but does not respond after that.

This is an unmodified unit, no modules installed, with firmware 2.01.09. AD integration is enabled. SMB and iSCSI are the only transports running.

Thecus folks: This ties back to ticket BEH-62042-858

Any thoughts from the community on this would be most appreciated.

Thanks,
-Joe

My experience with N7700 and WD 2TB Caviar Black

Hi all,

I've recently purchased the Thecus N7700 NAS with the idea of filling it with 2 TB disks. As probably some of you, I was very surprised to see these disks disappear from the list of supported harddisks. Despite all the issues I read here, I decided to risk purchasing Western Digital 2 TB disks anyway and see how it worked out for me (in case it didn't work, I could reuse them on a RAID controller I still have).Since there seem to be a lot of fuss on these 2 TB disks, I decided to share my (positive) experiences here so just that anybody considering buying the N7700 with 2TB disks, can also hear that sometimes it seems to work :).

I used firmware 3.00.06 on the Thecus N7700 and put three Western Digital Caviar Black 2 TB disks (WD2001FASS-00U0B with firmware 1.0) in RAID5. I created a master RAID, allocated 1% of space to it and distributed the remaining 99% capacity over three iSCSI volumes that I mount on a VMware vSphere 4 server. I used the out of the box configuration with "disk power management: OFF".

During the past three days, I have been continuously copying data to the disks, in three threads, totalling more than 9 TB of data copied. The disk load was the maximum I could attain, which is 60 MB/s write speed. I have pulled out disks and let the array rebuild (I had to stop the copy during the rebuild since the load of the copying prevented the rebuild from occuring -- this I consider to be a serious bug in the firmware!).

I did not encounter any problem at all, no arrays failed on me (except when I intentionally started pulling out disks). The speed are what I expect of them, so that makes me a happy, albeit unsupported, N7700 user!

I hope this also encourages Thecus to test the Caviar Black's (why only test consumer Green & Blue in all formats and not mid-market Caviar Black??? are you aiming at end-users or SMB's?) and put them on the compatibility list!

Hi all

Today I'm really kicking myself as I usually do lots of research before buying things:( Anyway, I currently have a Thecus N5200B with 5 x WD 1TB Caviar Greens configured in a RAID5 (all discs in array).

As my storage space is running low, I've taken delivery of a N7700 and 7 x 1.5TB WD Caviar Green drives. I bought all of this kit from Scan, and I went for the N7700 because it's the cheapest (by far) 7 bay NAS on the market - the Qnap 6 bay equivalent is almost a grand, versus £609!

On scan's website the HDD compatibility list throws out an error, and stupidly I didn't follow this up and google it. Anyway, I've just installed it and set up a new RAID5, but then I came on these forums and read about a ton of issues with 1.5TB/2TB HDDs with the N7700.

The question is, have I made a big mistake? I don't want to be in the position of having HDD failures, as I have about 6TB worth of data to put on there (all media files - DVD and BluRay rips).

I'm wondering if I should maybe look at changing the HDD to the 2TB Hitachi ones (as they are officially supported), or even change the NAS and spend loads more money looking at either the 6 or 8 bay Qnap NAS?

Secondly, I've also read that ext3 only allows a maximum of 8TB space, but I'm a little confused by this. In a RAID5, you lose some capacity anyway, but is this "lost" element included in the 8TB? If I were to put 7 x 2TB drives into the N7700, how would I maximise the space, as I've heard ZFS can be unreliable, and I don't know what XFS is?

If anyone could help it would be appreciated. I don't want to start transferring files across today if I'm on a loser to begin with....

Cheers

Originally I had a 80Gb HDD in the NAS to try it out as a JBOD before obtaining 2x 1Tb Seagate HDDs which are on the compatible list.

Since adding the two new drives and setting them up in a RAID 1 array (which took quite some time - overnight) I can get the sharing to work but the Media Server will not work. I have enabled the Media Server but in the status page it is showing "Stop". I have tried rebooting the device but this does not help.
Consequently I cannot select the shared folders to share the media in those folders. The screen refreshed but the shared folders do not get their selected tick. The NAS says "Folder Add!" I am able to see the shared folders on my network and have uploaded media files to them. With the Media Server not working this NAS is just a storage device.

Any help would be appreciated. Maybe I've not done something I should have or done something wrong. Please help.

Hi, I have two N5200 units. One is fine, the other is not working.

When the unit is started it goes into "Self Testing..." mode on the LCD and the Red LED ! lights up. The fans are running but it never goes any further. Pushing the ESC switches on the front, I get "No HBT Log", but nothing else.

I tried resetting the interface with the Reset button for 10 secs, but it does not exit this "Self Testing..." mode
I tried removing all Hard Drives and resetting, still no change.

What more can I try to solve this issue?
Thanks for any suggestions
