Re: Headlines - The great Geek vs Nerd debate

I'd say I'm more of a nerd than a geek, although I do have a social life. I do like diving into particular subjects and learning them inside out.

As soon as someone mentions computer games in general conversation I can bore people for hours.

    Haha!

I met my sister in law's new boyfriend over the weekend for the first time and he is obsessed with anything Nintendo, his knowledge on the whole history blew me away. He's coming round, without girlfriend, this weekend armed with Super Smash Bros Brawl! A new nerd friend for me! Yay!

Re: Headlines - The great Geek vs Nerd debate

I think there are intellegent people, and there are stupid people.

I class intellegent people as: Achieves to a high calibre in what they do (whatever they do, be it canoeing, baking or PC modding). And are naturally knowledgable and curious about how things work (even if they don't show it).

I class stupid people as: Isn't capable of achieving anything worthwhile. Doesn't know what to do with their lives because of their inability to inspire and show initiative.

It may seem harsh at first but think about it and perhaps you will agree. I don't really think you should class people as geek, nerd, goth or hooligan; as long as you're intellegent I don't mind who you are.

Re: Headlines - The great Geek vs Nerd debate

I would say i have a healthy obsession with various things and due to me being socially inept and unwilling to engage in conversation with people, then i think i hide myself well..

more geek than nerd but I have traits of both. I'm special, i'm unique, i'm me!

edit: going by Zhaomans description, then i would also say i have a stupid intellegence. i know alot, but am unwilling to do anything about it.. 7 years unemployed is all you need to know.

Yeah, the history of Nintendo is quite geeknerdy or whatever those words mean, but you can out nerdgeek someone with the history of characters that don't even really exist.

The history of Mario for example...

'Did you know that Miyamoto was working on a Popeye game, Nintendo lost the rights, Shigsy had to come up with a new character, it looked how it looked because of the tech limitations of the day, blah, blah, named after a caretaker at Nintendo, blah, blah, Jump Man, blah blah, Super Mario...'

Talking about the history of Mario the way Simon Schama talks about the history of Henry II is always good for geek points.

Re: Headlines - The great Geek vs Nerd debate

Pretty much a geek although I do seem to portray certain nerdy characteristics.

For example, I had a social life but now pretty much just have a girlfriend (think that alone rules me out of nerd but you never know), and my idea of a fun night involves movies and fine dining*

The worst kind of person and I'm sure we have all met them at school etc.. Is the "wannabe nerd". The people who simply pretend to know about physics because they memorised a few lines for Hawkins latest or read New Scientist that week. Then they get terrible grades because they are really quite stupid

    * you know.. indian, chinese, pizza

I've heard the words 'uber geek' banded about, what's all that about?
