News - Sony won't be budging on PS3 price this year

Looks like we'll have to wait much longer than hoped for a PS3 price cut.

Its a shame I really want a PS3 but I cant see it as good value at its current price point. Maybe around the 200 mark and I'd think about it.

The majority of good games for the PS3 are multiformat, and as I already have a decent PC and an Xbox, Im only really missing out on Little Big Planet at the minute. There also isn't enough games for the PS3 for me to be able to justify the price.

As for blu-ray it is a complete waste of time in my eyes, the disks are far too expensive and dont really offer a noticable improvment in quality.

Im just hopeing the rumors that the PS4 will be out for 2010 are true.

Prices from £11.99 for new blu-ray releases are hardly "far too expensive" in my eyes, is it really that more expensive than a standard dvd new release? In regard to a "noticeable improvement" from a personal experience, watching a blu-ray on my 52" 1080p is quite noticeable in comparison to watching standard dvd. I alsp prefer the DTS HD 7.1 sound that comes with my blu-ray as well

i paid near £400 for my 60GB ps3 a year ago. And to me its still great value for money. It is an excellent Blu-Ray player which is what i wanted.

As for blu-ray showing no extra quality then you must be blind of else you are using a tesco value crt SD tv tbh!

I suggest you get in front of good quality hd kit including surround sound and then tell me again there is no difference.

The PS3 certainly has a lot to offer, but in today's climate it poses buyers with a tough decision - particularly when it's in stores alongside equally-enjoyable consoles that cost less than half the price.

That said, the console itself is doing relatively well considering its high asking price. Question is, will it continue to sell well when its rivals continue to drop in price? That I'm not so sure of.

i think its the blu-ray drive which is helping it sell. its a cheap way for people to take advantage of their new hdtv's.

I never bought mine for gaming

Ive got a pc for that lol, plus as it can update regularly the console constantly improves.

But if not for gaming, you could have bought two standalone Blu-ray players: http://www.empiredirect.co.uk/conten...~panasonic.htm ?

I think the key selling factor behind the PS3 is the PS2. That was simply a corker of a console and has a fanbase that would make even the Wii whimper. It's logical for many of those millions to want to stick to the tried-and-trusted and upgrade to the PS3.

Imagine if the PS3 was manufactured by another company, let's say it was Toshiba's first-ever games console. Would it have been a success? I think it may have died off in its first few months with its £425 launch price. The PS2 fanbase, I think, helped keep it afloat during that initial period, and Blu-ray may have been a small factor, too.

I'd still like to get a PS3 myself, but at present I couldn't justify the cost.

The other rival is SkyHD, which currently can be had for £75.

More HD content than you get with a blueray player for the same price...

(ie if you spent £250 on the player, and £250 on sky HD....)

I have a decent 32" set, any bigger and it would not be comfortable to watch in my room (and I'm comfortable in my manhood not to need a jumbo telly to feel good about myself ) with a decent upscaling DVD player. In the words of Yahtzee "Ive never found myself saying Army of Darkness is still a glorious celebration of boyish fantasy violence. If only the resolution was a little bit bigger it would be much improved" Im not saying it isnt better Im just saying it not better enough for my money.

So considering I dont want a Blu ray player and the gaming side is less then rosey at present the PS3 can stay in the shop untill it is around £200 with at least the catalouge of games the Xbox has.
