Yep, I think I'm also going to PS3/Wii route, although the Wii will have to wait until after Christmas as I've still got to do the whole shopping for presents thing..

    So will the PS3 ^_^

Thanks for that stewart! I've been having some trouble trying to decide on getting a Wii and that has really put it all into perspective.

Great article - except you forgot to point out a rather large downfall the PS3 has already suffered - The lack of 720p BluRay support, as far as I was aware the PS3 can't downscale the BluRay movies from 1080p to 720p properly. Thats a big downer for anyone without a 1080p set (basically just about everyone).

So if you want HD movies on a 720p set, you have to go 360.

well, why do you consider that a downside? very very few tvs actually display 720p naturatlly, they mostly scale it to 1366x768 (which is apparently 768p). so.. if your player scales to 720p, and your tv scales to 768p, firstly you've lost a bunch of detail because you're scaling twice, and secondly you're loosing some because you're scaling in the first place to smaller than the native res.

1080p output is no disadvantage at all, unless your tv can't handle/rescale it

Yes but with the PS3 if your TV won't accept 1080p, it'll only do 480p (704x480) in BluRay, so thats a lot more scaling for a 720p (or 1366x768) set to do when compared to the scaling from a 1280x720 source.

I consider it a downside because I don't really consider 480p "HD", its not even better resolution the PAL-I at the moment.

all hd ready tvs have to support 1080i so you can just get it to scale to that

besides, its a problem that will be fixed with a firmware update, and it doesnt affect everyone. hardly a major issue

Europe doesn't really have much of an issue with it, we can just set the ps3 to 1080 output and let the TV downscale

Tell that to the people that just spent $600 on them!

The 1080i picture is reportedly very grainy from the PS3 - from what I've read from people talking about the problem on other forums.

If they're going to fix it in a firmware update thats good news. I found it a little bit odd for Sony to release it without 720p support, considering how much of a hoo-haa they're making over BluRay.
