    Will it run?

    Afternoon folks...

Right question is, does anyone know if a system with the following specification would be able to run left4dead bearing in mind someone managed to make it run on an Eee (albeit at 10fps).

    CPU: Athlon 64 3500
    Ram: 2Gb DDR2
    GFX: ATI Radeon 9800pro 128mb

I can't see the minium specs online here as I'm at work and gaming stuff is filtered. However, off the top of my head I believe the minium GFX is a Radeon 9600?? that said has anyone managed to make this game run ok with an older rig?

I'm thinking it could probably be forced to use lower settings and/or an earlier version of directx like HL2 can.

    Cheers Sleepy...

I reckon it will work... its for a mate who has an old rig, for the moment, he is getting a new one soon.

He's gonna buy and download L4D over the weekend.

@Salazaar: Yes, that was my thinking... I managed to get HL2 to run on my Eee and it was fairly playable. A little tweaking, if necessary, and we should be able to get a half decent framerate.

I can give it a try on a (much) worse rig later if you want, (depending on whether i have windows installed on it ATM), and see how it deals on that?

    Re: Will it run?

    Cheers guys,

Should find out how it performs tomorrow, the chap (who has those specs) ordered it form amazon on friday. He is looking to buy a new rig soon so I'll be asking for some advice on what he should go for when he gives me the budget. I've given him a few exmples of what he could get recently.

    Re: Will it run?

FYI I have a really old system and I can tell you that you get lots of graphical artifacts if you try to run it with a FX5900, but a Radeon 9550 can run it perfectly fine if you are used to <15 fps all the time.

    Re: Will it run?

    Hi DobbyX

Cheers, have you tried forcing the game to use and earlier version of directx? I can't really look for instructions now (at work) but I believe that is the way that someone managed to get the game to run on an Eee pc so that might be worth a look.

In fact I can vouch for the above, I managed to get HL2 running @around 10-15fps on my Eee using that technique and it didn't look THAT bad lol! I'm not even gonna try and get L4D running on it lol! I think its a waste of time.

    Re: Will it run?

I probably will not bother with trying that, seeing as I will be getting a new computer at last in a week or so, but thank you for the advice. I currently have to swap out the graphics card every time I want to run L4D, which is a pain to say the least.

The FX5900 only has directx 8.1 hardware so although it is faster than the 9550, it is also older, which I think causes the artifacts (complete loss of textures and weird patches of white and black on parts of the scenery).

For me, L4D is quite buggy. I randomly lose textures - I sent TAKTAK screenshots of the yellow floor, trees that are black and white with numbers on. It's all patched up with latest Nvidia drivers but it's no better.

    Re: Will it run?

    +Update+

On the following spec Left4dead seems to run fine at 800x600 in low-medium (some things are in medium, I'm not sure which ones I'll ask) detail with no AA or AF

    CPU: Athlon 64 3500+ (~2.2Ghz)
Ram: 2Gb Corsair Value Select DDR1
GFX: ATI Radeon 9800SE (with the extra pixel pipes unlocked, so its effectively a pro), latest catalyst drivers
    Sound: Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
    HDD: SATA1 250Gb
    OS: Windows XP

Testament to the scalability of the source engine.
