Re: The Steam Linux Beta Survey Is Now Up!

Never used Linux but must admit, I hate the idea of this new Windows 8 desktop with the icons etc, I want to be able to use it like Windows 7 so won't be moving to 8 unless they bring full start bar functionality.

So if Microsoft are heading in that direction on future Operating Systems then I will be looking into alternatives and considering what Valve are doing with Linux then that is probably going to be the direction I will be heading in. I just hope that gaming on Linux improves and that I will be able to run my entire Steam catalogue as well as games from everywhere else like Gamersgate, GOG and EA Origin

Well, the way to gain experience is to use it - and modern distros like Ubuntu are pretty easy to get going - and its free, so the only thing you have to invest is time.

A lot of the 'fear' of Linux is in program/application installation, but if steam can sort that out, so playing a game is simply a matter of clicking on an icon, or selecting from a menu - is that really a problem?

    Go for it.

"Linux in a Nutshell" (O'Reilly) gives you most of the common command line stuff (as well as a ton of other stuff) Not particularly cheap, but well worth its (considerable) weight in gold!

That's kinda always been a work in progress, if I'm going to be honest. The trouble is a team as small as the one who is developing WINE (software implementing Windows APIs for Linux/OS X/other UNIXy OSes) hitting such a large target like the DirectX set of APIs is a really lofty goal, so your mileage very much varies between games. So without game developers making a concious decision to either develop native Linux ports, or work with the WINE guys to patch up the bits of the Windows APIs their software uses which are missing/buggy with WINE, it may not happen as much as we like. But frankly I'm continually amazed with just how many 32bit windows programmes just work under it, sometimes even quite a bit faster than native Windows execution, too.

On the plus side, with a heavyweight like Valve putting real resources into a native Steam client and Source engine port for Linux, other developers will paying keen attention to see how it goes.

I'm trying Ubuntu on an old laptop that had Vista BSOD on it. Ubuntu works quite nice, super fast. Only used it a little bit at the mo, but i am quite pleased with how easy and quick the install process was. Plus it recognised all the built-in devices easily, like Wireless and Webcam.

Yes. Ubuntu has come a long way since I first used it sometime back! Sadly there is still some bad stigma about it and most of the world thinks that Windows or Mac are the only OS's in existence. I haven't actually used it for about a year now but am just hanging in there for a load of my Steam games to work on Ubuntu and then I'll be switching to it as my main OS.

If anyone here actually tries out this Beta on Linux then I'd be very interested to hear how you got on and what games you played

Very interesting as it is a unique advantage that gaming on Ubuntu, and Linux in general, has over gaming on Windows. What do you guys think?
