What games do and don't work easily on 4k?

I got lucky.. I borrowed a 4k monitor for a few days.

Cant get half my favourite games to work because.. it won't run any resolutions apart from 4k.

Sol Survivor worked like a dream and I had major wood for a short time... then Defense Grid failed to boot and chucked a Direct X error

then CoD W@W booted at 640x480, the only other option being 4k and when I chose it.. it never came back.. and nor did my PC .. requiring a hard power off (the mains switch)

tried once more before giving up.

So.. it's unplugged. In short...

what games run well at 3840 x 2160?

and do any 4k monitors run lower res? Or are they stuck at default (guess they maybe?)

Which model is it? I wonder if 30Hz is the bigger issue

I'm surprised you can only get it to run at 4k though. Have you tried changing the desktop resolution (say, to 1080p) before starting the games? Or will windows only recognise it as being capable of 4k? Have you tried the advanced settings and "Show all modes"? It *should* be possible to run it at pretty much any resolution - but I have no personal experience, so hard to be sure. What's your GPU, and what type of connection are you using (i.e. dp/hdmi/dvi)?

Most recent AAA stuff can do it. I think you're going to fall into the trap that the things that will run, won't run well(assuming you're using the rig in the 'my system').

Skyrim, BF3/4, Bioshock Infinite, Grid 2, ARMA 3, RYSE, Star Citizen, Dirt Showdown, Hitman Absolution, Tomb Raider(2.99 on steam this week), Crysis 3 and Sleeping Dogs will all run and make your GPU whimper.

Anything from recent times I would *expect* to run fine. It's been a while since I heard of games not liking non-common resolutions due to poor coding (although there are a few coming out of the woodwork with 4k here now but most seem to be oddities rather then just not working)

If you get a black screen, have you tried Alt+Enter to window it? You may be able to tweak settings from window and then de-window it again.

Depends on the monitor. Some (most) use display tiling to present themselves as something similar to two monitors next to each other, which creates issues with scaling sometimes. Ones with a single tile are probably more compatible for different resolutions.

the resolution won't slide down to anything on desktop.. greyed out.

I think it's becasue, as Kal says, it works in the way 2 monitors do

I know this because, having failed to get a game to boot I was stuck on half the screen, the other half was black and no amount of reboots sorted it

And the windows Task bar only reched half way across.

I gave up.. it's not for me yet!

Yeah, you'd need to change the resolution via .ini etc before launching the game if it's already set at an unsupported resolution. Not to hard with most games, if you decide to give it another go.

It's probably Windows scaling issues which are the real problem...something Windows 10 is supposed to address, I believe...

alien isolation runs really well at 4k. I think that is mainly because the game doesn't have to render much but the game does look very pretty at 4k.
