Yes, it's definitely taste. Arguably, 1, 2 had better story lines, but I preferred the open world exploration and vast amount of side quests in 3 and NV (and in the entire Elder Scrolls series) to the mostly linear nature of the first 3. Tactics was kind of meh any way you look at it. I'll just suffice it to say that to me, the entire series is a must have, from start to finish, and whatever may come along. Each game has it's strengths and weaknesses, but all are worth exploring.

That's an absolutely fair criticism. Bethesda RPGs have always required some effect from the player to make the worlds come alive in the mind of the player. I rather like that aspect in a sandbox game, but as games fill in more and more it becomes harder to do - sometimes less is more.

But I also completely agree on their characters - it's something they've only ever incrementally improved on and they're still a long way behind many other series.

Yet the games are still amazing

Oh that's interesting, thanks. At first glance it didn't look much like it, though the building textures were quite nice - the landscape wasn't great.

Their parent company acquired id software a few years ago,and they said that all their future games would be using their engines. But,OFC this could change by the time the game is released though.

Now that you mention it, and looking back on it, The Evil Within and both Wolfenstein games ran on the id Tech 5 engine - which may be unhappy news for modders. There is a toolkit, but on its own, it's a 35gb download, and according to Carmack, they have a 300 core render farm just for the purpose of the megatexture creation...
