    Doom - GOTY candidate?

Not seen a thread for Doom post release yet, so thought i'd start one.

This is the most fun i've had with a single player FPS for years - it has the feel of classic Doom with some modern elements (especially at the start of the early levels where you start in a hanger/airlock - so many echos of Doom!), with near perfect pacing and well, its just plain fun.

I've not been able to stop playing it when at home and nothing else has really grabbed me much this year aside from perhaps Tomb Raider, but I really think that iD have just done a fantastic job with this iteration. It even has the bones of a story to keep things interesting in between the arenas, without going for the cheap jump scares of Doom3 and similar clones. I really think this could be game of the year (and it certainly is so far) - its just so rare these days to see something executed so well

I've not touched multiplayer yet so can't comment on that aspect, but on my second playthrough of the campaign now and really loving it.

I do wish that Carmack had remained on the team and that they had kept in the VR support (that would seriously be awesome) but even without that, its good enough in simple 2D

    Any other thoughts?

    Re: Doom - GOTY candidate?

I have been enjoying it immensly, fast paced no nonsense action game. I am heading towards the end of the campaign I believe, currently in the laser room with the BFG 2 and I did find a body part but not sure what to be doing!

I have played multiplayer a bit and have quite enjoyed it, pretty fast and no nonsense but some of the weapons can be a bit OTT while others feel like pea shooters, you do occasionally get full teams that have rocket launchers and a fair bit of ammo and it throws the balance out. Matchmaking seems a bit off also with lower level players getting thrown in with people that are level 25+ and a lot more hours under their belt so you are cannon fodder. It is still ok as a diversion though and how many games multiplayer is spot on when a game launches

If you are only at the BFG bit then you are about 1/2 way through - it feels like you are close to the end but you have a long way to go still

I'll give MP a shot - I heard bad things about the beta but that its actually better in the production version, but who knows. Hoping for more of a QuakeIII Arena style setup, so we will see!

I got the BFG, not hard once you work it out!

I killed everything in the next room and swapped to the chaingun to conserve BFG Ammo and now I can't seem to get the BFG back presently.........and just as I type that I remember that like the chainsaw the BFG has its own specific weapon key!!!

    Re: Doom - GOTY candidate?

I have just done the tower. Not sure how far through the game I am.

Single player is great, especially the classic levels. Really enjoying it.

Multiplayer has been a bit meh. I dont really have time for full on games so always enjoyed a quick game with bots but they cut the bots out so personally its a bit hit and miss for me.

    Re: Doom - GOTY candidate?

I'm loving it so far. Not touched the MP yet. So glad they knocked that Call of Doom nonsense on the head and actually made a doom game. Best FPS singleplayer I've played in ages, can't remember the last time tearing through a wave of enemies left me grinning, their laser like focus on gameplay really payed off. So refreshing playing a character that matches the gameplay too. Rather incongruously switching from unstoppable, psychotic god of death to deeply concerned about the local economy and delivering flower pots every 5 minutes. Knew I was going to like it by the time I got to that first elevator. Not finished it yet already looking forward to playing through again on the harder difficulties.

My biggest gripe with it is that it didn't come with a copy of the OST, which is just spot on. Mick Gordon outdid himself.

BFG is bound to T, you can see it's charges under your normal ammo count like the chainsaw.

    Re: Doom - GOTY candidate?

I've completed the first "episode" and found all the secrets I do like it so far (some interesting ones in there!). I've been playing a bit of the multiplayer in the evening, which has more of a pick up and drop feel to it though. Maybe the DLC will make the multiplayer a bit more dynamic over time.

    Re: Doom - GOTY candidate?

I'm loving the glorious brutality of it all.
In truth I'm not sure how much I think I'm playing "Doom" They could have made the marine look more like the classic one for example.
Still, they've gone for a particular slant and as far as I can tell are pulling it off.
Not having magazines and generally shooting from the hip without needing to be stealthy is old school yet highly refreshing.

I seem to be finding half the secrets, need to find the secret levels.

The single player is definitely GOTY worthy but the multiplayer is a bit of let down but I wasn't expecting much.

Just finished the single player. Absolutely loved it. Well put together and a lot of fun too. Hoping there will be a DLC announcement at E3 this year.

Multiplayer is sub par imo, they could have done it better but hopefully that will improve in time.

I'm not normally a DLC fan, but if there was some sort of re-imagining of Doom 2, I'd be very very happy!

Not touched multi-player yet, only finished the campaign game the other day. Is there a co-op mode? I used to love that in the original game; the way you could die, pop up at the start of the level, grab a rocket launcher and join back in with the ongoing boss fight
