Vista Movie Maker - any good?

Has anyone used the Windows Movie Maker in Vista (Home Premium or Ultimate Editions)? I'm looking for a basic video editing package that can edit MPEG files and create DVDs from them. Obviously, if Windows Movie Maker can do this then it would save me some cash!

For basic editing its fine. You can edit and re-arrange clips on the time line, you can add text, transition and some effects, you can overlay sound. It can probably do what you want.

It has very good image quality vs filesize if you use the VBR presets during save. I use it all the time when editing FRAPS game recordings!

I've always liked Windows Movie Maker but the XP edition never supported dvr-ms which is the tv recording format from windows media center. However since Vista it now does and so Movie Maker is again my software of choice.

It may not be the most powerful but you can add/remove audio tracks from video, add subtitles, add transition etc. Mostly I remove adverts from recorded TV and then convert to an alternative format - for playback on my iPAQ 214.

I'm making a guide to building a pc on it, and for what i need it for, its great, no fancy graphics, no moving/zooming/focusing or anything like that though.

Like the other's have already said, it's got all the basic features you'll probably need and it's very easy to use. for making the dvd try out microsoft dvd maker when you're done editing, that's also extremely easy to use and the results are actually quite good!
