Acoustic Energy Aego Ms would get my vote. Ive got a set in my Kitchen and its amazing how loud they can go without sounding distorted.

I have a Cambridge Audio A1 combined with a pair of Acoustic Solutions PF500 floor standing speakers, the audio quality is great, though the speakers are 200w and the amp can't push that out but it is still very loud when I want it to be![]()

Amp and speakers all the way. Brand new budget set up or second hand off ebay like everyone has said on here. Blow any crappy PC speakers out the water. Look out for nice amp in January sales.
There is a saying that "you'll get what you pay".IF I were you I will be satisfied with the T40s level.![]()
Recently got myself a pair of AudioEngine A2s and they sound brilliant. They replaced my dead Logitech Z4s. No need for a sub-woofer with these. Don't get me wrong they are not going to shake the room with bass, but the bass you get is pure and tight, not huge booming muffled crap so typical of cheaper 2.1 setups. The Z4s were not too bad in this respect, but the A2s blow them away in terms of sound quality. I'm getting that "never heard that before" experience in so many of my favourite tracks.
I've demo'd them to 2 mates so far and both have asked me where I have hidden the sub - they can't believe what these tiny speakers achieve!
They are pricey but I would heartily recommend them.

I know this is an old (June last year) thread, but seeing as it's back, I'll add my 2p too ....
There is, in my view, no substitute for listening to speakers before buying. As it happens, I endorse what Zak33 and g8ina have said, but speakers are a very personal, and very subjective, thing, and there's NO substitute for buying what YOU, dear reader, like the sound of, regardless of whether any of us do.
Noli nothis permittere te terere.
I'd get something basic (but not too basic) from richersounds..they will all sound better than specific PC speakers!!

Most specific pc speakers arent actually that great (Logitech's etc). The few logitech's (G51 and others) Ive had have been extremely bass heavy and the tweeters lack clarity. The bass is not even a nice sounding bass its just loud and monotone (you usually cant tell what instrument created the bass). They sound good compared to the speakers built into your Monitor/Tv/laptop but a half decent amp and speakers will blow them out of the water.
The Acoustic energy Aego m's however are made by a relatively high end audio company and do provide a very good sound for a 2.1 system (I own a set myself but have recently upgraded to a dedicated amp and a set of monitor audio bx2's) but a half decent amp and speakers will always win.
I stick by my Logitech X530s, they sound great and were great value. They also seem better that Logitech's higher price offerings. Obviously not relevant for your budget but they are seriously good (also better than the X-540s).
I have Creative T20 speakers and they haven't disappointed me.
Right, as Nibbler never di come back to this thread and its been attracting a LOT of necroing, Im locking it.
