I would like to suggest Sony Walkman X-Series with excellent display and multimedia playback. Once I presented as a gift to my friend also and finds great application and usage.
Choose a known brand that offers warranty. Yes, there is a huge difference between a cheap Mp3 player and a costly one. The more expensive Mp3 player that carries a specific brand name is more durable so you can enjoy it more. Also, good Mp3 player brands adhere to environmental and quality standards.

I have the Sansa Clip + and I'm satisfied with it. However, the earphones that come with it broke within 5 months even with utmost care.

If it's the whole iTunes/iOS that's the problem, install RockBox instead.
