PC market shrinks for the first time in a decade

It seems the PC market is starting to slow down:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...-a-decade.html

Tablets and the general economic problems seem to have been the main reasons it seems.

Ultrabook sales have not matched what Intel has expected:

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...t-by-half.html

It seems even Intel is not immune from this:

    http://newsroom.intel.com/community/...evenue-outlook

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/narrativ...eview-intel-4/

Intel Corporation today announced that third-quarter revenue is expected to be below the company's previous outlook as a result of weaker than expected demand in a challenging macroeconomic environment. The company now expects third-quarter revenue to be $13.2 billion, plus or minus $300 million, compared to the previous expectation of $13.8 billion to $14.8 billion.
    AMD is also suffering too:

    http://www.xbitlabs.com/news/cpu/dis...d_Quarter.html

It looks like we need to respect our new tablet overlords!!

today's tablets can completely satisfy the needs of average people (FB, shopping and other similar things). I understand why they don't want to bother with PCs and laptops.

Lol, i think its just the sales of stuff that would be used only to browse and facebook that have been replaced by tablets. That and people are getting a bit more cautious as to what they buy, they look for the cheaper stuff more than they used to, thanks to the economy...

Intel consumer CPU sales are down and profits are 27% less than in Q4 2011:

Re: PC market shrinks for the first time in a decade

TBH, has the PC market shrunk or has it changed? To me, a tablet (and even a smartphone) can technically be described as a PC. It's all in the eye of the beholder
    Main PC: Asus Rampage IV Extreme / 3960X@4.5GHz / Antec H1200 Pro / 32GB DDR3-1866 Quad Channel / Sapphire Fury X / Areca 1680 / 850W EVGA SuperNOVA Gold 2 / Corsair 600T / 2x Dell 3007 / 4 x 250GB SSD + 2 x 80GB SSD / 4 x 1TB HDD (RAID 10) / Windows 10 Pro, Yosemite & Ubuntu
    HTPC: AsRock Z77 Pro 4 / 3770K@4.2GHz / 24GB / GTX 1080 / SST-LC20 / Antec TP-550 / Hisense 65k5510 4K TV / HTC Vive / 2 x 240GB SSD + 12TB HDD Space / Race Seat / Logitech G29 / Win 10 Pro
    HTPC2: Asus AM1I-A / 5150 / 4GB / Corsair Force 3 240GB / Silverstone SST-ML05B + ST30SF / Samsung UE60H6200 TV / Windows 10 Pro
    Spare/Loaner: Gigabyte EX58-UD5 / i950 / 12GB / HD7870 / Corsair 300R / Silverpower 700W modular
    NAS 1: HP N40L / 12GB ECC RAM / 2 x 3TB Arrays || NAS 2: Dell PowerEdge T110 II / 24GB ECC RAM / 2 x 3TB Hybrid arrays || Network:Buffalo WZR-1166DHP w/DD-WRT + HP ProCurve 1800-24G
    Laptop: Dell Precision 5510 Printer: HP CP1515n || Phone: Huawei P30 || Other: Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Pro 10.1 CM14 / Playstation 4 + G29 + 2TB Hybrid drive

Re: PC market shrinks for the first time in a decade

Depends, shaithis, on what is meant by PC. Tablets, and smartphones, are computers (or contain one, as a smartphone is really a phone with a computer, but the primary purpose is as a phone), in the sense that they're personal, and are computers. But so is my PVR, my satnav, hell, even my washing machine.

There's quite a lot I do on my PC that I wouldn't want to try on my tablet, and the tablet has uses that even a laptop isn't ideal for and a conventional PC is a non-starter.

So personally, I'd say they are different, but overlapping, markets, and the new one certainly has the potential, even near certainty, for significantly impacting on the old one. Maybe, in the long term, some form of tablet will replaced a full PC entirely, but we're a long way of that, yet.

But it's somewhat a matter of semantics.

well the Intel Haswell isn't exactly going to blow your computer out of the water, everyone will be happy with Sandy/Ivy Bridge and I think Intel will suffer further as the jumps aren't so big anymore for desktops.

Perhaps PC processor technology has reached a plateaux.

Re: PC market shrinks for the first time in a decade

    AMD losses detailed:

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01...ncial_results/

    http://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/01..._of_this_year/

Losses were actually below what analysts had predicted, margins have increased somewhat and share price actually has increased slightly:

    http://www.forbes.com/sites/ericsavi...s-inch-higher/

It seems the major component of the loss is actually due to their agreement with Global Foundries regarding wafers. Outside that they actual made lower losses than in the previous quarter. It really seems Global Foundries is more or less a big problem for AMD with their excessive charges!!

    Edit!!

However,at least one good thing has emerged - nearly one third of all notebooks sold in Q4 2012 in the US used AMD CPUs!

    Second Edit!!

Most of the losses are due to charges from GF:

    http://www.anandtech.com/show/6690/a...wards-the-next

GF is really a thorn in the side of AMD!!

When do you think they'll divulge their income from the from Xbox and PS4? Having a clean sweep with the consoles must have brought in *something*.

They need to launch first. I do think Jaguar will be the important chip for AMD in 2013.

Re: PC market shrinks for the first time in a decade

Tablets / phones mostly satisfy the needs of Joe Average. Most people expect computers to work like phones (apps, fixed limited functions) anyway and simply don't understand / need the complexity of the PC. Proper PCs won't disappear for a long time though - for real work, flexibility and power a gimmickpad simply doesn't cut it.

I would guess that most of those CPUs are APUs, and that would explain why Intel is raving about the improvements to the Haswell IGP over anything else lol.

It seems like Intel is not ready to let AMD run unchecked in the mid-low end notebook market, so I hope that the latter continue to push forward with Jaguar.
