Okay, I'd like you guys to help me out here, lots of memories of varying goodness must be better than one bad one.

I'm trying to find out the name of a book, but i can only remember little bits of it:

1. It's kiddie-aimed
2. There was a few characters i 'member - Tock the watchdog, the Whetherman, a mathmatician and a word dude, some guys who floated...
3. Some sort of strange world
4. the main character was a boy
5. Was a long book
6. Was made into a film/tv programme

Anyone got any clues?

it was great, they jumped to conclusions, conducted the orchestra that made the sun come up and the world go round, and it was all about which was more important, words or numbers.

umm, no, they were travelling along in their car and one of them made an assumption, was whisked out of the car and landed on a small island in the middle of the ocean.


the island was called conclusions


the whole book is full of incredibly daft things like that.
