    Visit to Tokyo

My parents are off to Tokyo in a few months and have asked if there's anything there I'd like, I couldn't think of much, apart from an Ipod Video. But I'm not sure if it'll be in English or how much it would cost, anyone have any ideas on this? or other suggestions on decent tech to bring back?

    Thank you.

They all come from the same factory. It might be set to Japanese by default, but that can be changed easily enough.

    What about accompanying software?

What about any power supply? Multi-voltage?

What happens if it develops a fault? Will Apple UK honour a Japanese warranty, or will it have to be returned to Apple Japan?

And don't forget that if they bring it back with them, they may end up paying import duty and/or VAT on it.

I remember reading somewhere that Apple honour warranties on portable type items. So things like macbooks, ipods, etc.

But I would just double check on that.

I was out there recently myself, thought about buying a PS3 but decided against it as it wouldn't play our PS2 back catalogue, even at the saving you can make.
What I did buy was a decent chefs' knife, with a good price saving but wasn't tempted by the electronic offerings. The Sony place in Ginza pretty much went as far as saying if you buy Japanese home market products, they're not warrantied.

Having recently bought an Ipod from the States, this is what you get in the box (the CD sized box)

    Ipod

    cover/sleeve

    usb cable

    (note, no cd)

everything is downloaded from the website, including firmware etc, give me 2 ticks till i check language options...

scroll down to 5th option from main screen (settings), then 3rd option from bottom on that screen (language) and select yours from list.

there, Apple tech support eat your heart out

I think the packaging for the iPod is even too small for a normal CD anyway. At least the Nano box is

    iTunes...

Charges via USB. No power supply.

    Apple warranties are worldwide.

I would worry that my parents would get the wrong thing. iPod fine, you can't go too wrong with that, but i think it would scare them to death if i asked them to go into akhibara

i love my ipod, was pretty skeptical about them, but i had amazon.com vouchers to spend and needed something small enough for my mum to carry back and didnt have to worry about power supplies etc

If you dont already know. You can get the 5% tax off as well, being a tourist, but they have to
ask for it. Unless they are going to visit Akihabara anyway there is not much point going there
to buy stuff, its not any cheaper really. K's denki is cheap as they dont bother with loyalty cards.
Yodobashi is generally expensive but they sometimes have good deals.

You could get a Digital camera. Seeing as its now 245 yen to the pound a Panasonic TZ3
which i have seen for 38,000 yen is therefore £155 and its about £225 here.

Printer ink is half the price so that can be worth while.
