Why do you need a viewfinder? i can recommend the Fuji Finepix F20/30 if you can live without a viewfinder.
These two are your best bets. http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fuji-FinePix...4072041&sr=8-3 http://www.amazon.co.uk/Fujifilm-Fin...4072041&sr=8-2 F30 has more features.

I am thinking of getting a fairly cheap decent camera as well. I was looking into Canon Powershot A550/A560. They have a viewfinder and use AA batteries instead of an internal one. Also uses SD cards as well. There's currently an A550 for sale in the "For Sale" forum here for £80 which is why I started looking into them.
It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt; then it's bloody hilarious!

How about something second hand? You can pick up a Canon G5 pretty cheap if you hit it at the right time....my wife's got one, and it's a solid little piece of kit (although not that little compared to some of the micros out there)

You get really nice colour from fuji, I wouldnt worry about battery life either.
I have a TZ3 from panasonic and although the 10x zoom is nice the photos just dont look as nice as my parents Fuji F10. Dedham dedham

Aye, second-hand is probably the way to go. Everyone pays through the roof because they want the maximum number of megapixels (these days, just as much of a myth as megahertz when it comes to quality), when in fact a decent quality second-hand camera can be better still.
Canon are the way to go, IMO. Big fan myself I've never seen them do less than average quality.

Re: digital camera advice
There's another review of the F40 here, if you're still considering your purchase:
