    Golly new features.... AGAIN :)

Apologies for any slow-running recently, but last month we served WAY over 25 million pages of content - and our (one year!) old servers were under pressure We have been shuffling things, and we soon will tell you about the simply incredible infrastructure which we are putting in place

The issue was well and truly addressed last week as we added NASA-levels of compute power to the HEXUS backend

Using the 'pause' created by this mammoth upgrade as an excuse to implement some of the clever ideas we have had for the past 6 months you have seen a pile of them already and today you will now notice that a HOTTEST ITEMS feature has been added

As you, the beloved HEXUS reader, check out new stories - the site will update and clearly show you what has been read, thing is often you also want to know what others are reading right?

(once you read stuff - it will get X-ed) this will happen on all of the content now - but specifically - with these being the hottest 5 items this week surely all of them should be read by YOU?

We will, of course, take your interests to heart - and give you MORE OF WHAT YOU CAME HERE FOR !

Check it out - on www.HEXUS.net and http://gaming.HEXUS.net

So hottest items is like, record page hits, shove it in the database then do order by most viewed.

    Impressive.

Saves you guessing.... Yes it's not exactly the most taxing thing but if people are reading them then surely you should too, right?

Yes the point here isn't the implementation, rather the fact that you can see what everybody else has been reading this week.

wouldnt the first 5 interesting items just stay there all week? with it being in the hottest list theres more chance of people reading the articles that are already there thus increasing the page hits and making it more difficult for an article not in the top5 to get into it?

No because there's more than one vector into an article.

If for example Slashdot, Digg or another similar site picks up on the article, not everyone is going to know, but it'll soon become a hot item and then people will read it.
