The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
Well more work for a start!
I never realized how much time I spend on the net rather then work until it was down this morning, as were transitioning to a leased line due to the office being out in the sticks and the best connection we can get is 512kb WTF!! But anyway I was amazed at how much work I did in the mean time. However, fortunately, normal service has resumed and I'm now making up for all the internet time I lost this morning. The Internet everybody, is there a bigger distraction then this? |

We'd have to pay money for music, buy cinema tickets, watch tv progs when they are on the tv, buy PC games, buy porn, phone people, post letters, keep old consoles, etc, etc.***************************

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
It would have taken my dad about 20 years to get all the info he has about the family tree/history instead of spending about a year.
A few weeks ago he went to trace a relative (his cousin) that had emigrated to Australia in the 1960's. He finds the record of Assisted Immigration online, gets the Oz equivalent of 192.com, finds two people that could be him along with their telephone numbers then the next morning rings the first and yep it's him. First contact from anyone from the UK in 43 years! This bloke couldn't believe it and nor could we. He even cleared up some questions with regard to my great grandfathers Boer and WWI medals. I can remember the first time I sent an email in 1992 using JANET. I jumped around like a 3 year old when I got one back. I thought it was amazing. Little did I know.

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
I would probably watch a lot more TV and listen to less music/radio if it wasn't for the internet. Sitting here with 6Music on Sky (channel 0120), TV is far too distracting when reading forums.
I also wouldn't have met some really cool people if it wasn't for the interent and Hexus

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
I can also remember the first time I sent an email. A geek friend of mine who 'knew computers' set it up over the phone, and I sent him an email.
Then I asked if it was free. Oh for those days again. 56k modems... paying by the minute for net access like you are ringing a sex line... using Altervista as your search engine, Windows 95 as your OS... Maybe even saying A\S\L? Happy days. |

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
My first experiences of the internet was with AOL at a friends house. we all used to sit around pretending to be different people on the 'CB Radio' application, which was just AOLs IRC like network.
First modem = a trust 28.8 job i bought in Virgin Megastore. Remember when Friends and Family came in? oh the money i saved with that! |

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
Christ, its been a long time since I saw that knocking about!
My first net experience came about on MSN when my friends at school told me it was all the rage, thus the begging of the end! And then the school admins blocking hotmail on all the computers only for them to remove the restriction a week later becasue of uproar from the teachers! |

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
When i was at school, the admins didn't have to worry about blocking access to different programs as we didn't have internet access on any of the computers! The business studies department had rooms of RM PC's running 3.11 and Winword. The computing department has Acorn RISC computers. Can't remember the model numbers, but they were the same shape and the Amiga 1200.
I'd quite like to go back to the Grammar School to see what they are running now

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
I probably would have done REALLY well in my studies but not have even considered doing music production, which is what my life revolves around right now.... not quite sure which I would have preferred...

Re: The Internet.......... What would we do without it?
My first thought was "I'd still be hunting for insurance for my new car". Then I remembered that I wouldn't have said car if it weren't for Internet searches. So without the Internet I'd be... walking.
But I wouldn't spend so much time procrastinating.
If you can't keep up, stick with reality...
