what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
ok, i have an old toshiba T4600C laptop, came with win 3.1 and has a floppy drive, i guess its a 486 or a 386, not sure though. its really old, and not really much use that i can think of, it also has a rather low resolution colour screen.
can anyone think of any kind of use for this? it REALLY seems like a shame to just bin it.... thanks in advance! ps: i think this is in the right place, if it is not would a moderator please kindly move it to the correct location for me please |

Re: what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
its monitor is frankly rubbish... very low resolution... and not exactly sure how many colours either
win 3.1 is far too limited and out dated for my tastes, i guess putting damn small linux on it is a possibility, although i am not sure how... it would require about 50 floppy disks, and i am unsure if the drive even works. the other problem with that is that most of the stuff i would/could do on a laptop requires internet access, and i am unsure if it would even be possible to add WIFI to this thing... thanks for your suggestions anyway. if you have any more please post them thanks in advance! |

Re: what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
you can put an old version of slackware linux on it - 3.1 maybe..its about 3 floppy discs if you dont install X and a load of other tools
![]() As for what to do with it after...well I have no idea lol. I had a similar laptop in my 1st year of uni with a bigger hard drive, and we put slackware on it first..and then got bored so decided to install windows XP on it lol - it worked! We had to do alot of messing around transferring the setup files over a network connection, and it took hours to do, but it installed in the end, even if it wasnt usable with its 1 hour boot up time ![]() That laptop was a 486-DX, 16mb ram, 1.1GiB hard drive...a toshiba iirc.

Re: what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
eBay is good. Someone will probably pick it up. Also there are charity places that pick up old PCs, refurbish them and use them in various places where old crap is not a problem.
One of my dad's mates has a 486 with 8MB and he uses it with Win95, Office 95 and some really lightweight browser and emailer. It does the job he wants.

Re: what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
I wouldn't recommend binning it because I am sure someone in this world needs a computer, a laptop as well. I agree with some people say, maybe give to a charity or recycle....keep old goods cycle moving!

Re: what to do with a REALLY old laptop?
What car do you drive? Turn it into a diagnostic laptop - VAG-COM etc.
If you can get DOS on it (I presume as it's running 3.1 it is DOS) sell it on ebay. Mention the fact that it has DOS, serial ports and the ability to run EEPROM editing software (VAGCAN etc) for VAG cars. I'll take 10% of your final selling price before fees. |
