Giving Blood
I got a nice letter from the National Blood Service to thank me for my 25th donation. It's just a number, but I do like to help where I can and giving blood is easy to do. In the first paragraph it also says that very few people give blood at all. So, I thought I would maybe ask who does and doesnt, just out of interest and maybe start an interesting discussion. At the same time if I can encourage a couple of you to donate that wouldnt hurt.
Info: The National Blood Service - do something amazing give Blood So, do you give blood already? Would you consider it? Are you unable to give blood due to having had transplant surgery or anther reason? Is it aginst your religion or other personal beliefs? Just interested to see the numbers.

Re: Giving Blood
I've always considered it, and your thread has pointed out where my closest donor center is - I think I shall start very soon - doesn't cost me anything, and might save a life, must be worth it!

Yeah I give blood.. done it twice so far, I would give it even more often if I could but you have to wait 4 months between sessions!

Re: Giving Blood
I used to - the vampire shad about 8 pints out of me without a problem.. and then the last couple of times I've been, they took the needle out, I get off the bed and then wake up in a different place with everyone looking very concerened about me. Last time I was out for 5 minutes and they were starting to get *really* worried. I was advised not to come again

Re: Giving Blood
Yeah regularly, and again yeah would do it more often if I could. Obviously they have the huge gap between donations as a way to stop potential problems, but it shouldn't be restricting people who are perfectly healthy enough to give more than that - especially when they keep sending out letters about being low!

Re: Giving Blood
I think I've donated 18 or 19 times now. I've not been able to give at all this year becuase I've always been working abroad when they've been in the area.
They're here mid December but although I'll be home then I can't give as it's the day I get back from New York and because of West Nile virus they won't take blood from anyone who has come back from North America within the last 28 days. |

Re: Giving Blood
It hurts? Can't say I've ever felt pain when giving blood. The only slightly uncomfortable bit for me is when the prick your finger to take a couple of drops of blood to check your iron level.

Re: Giving Blood
It's something i've always intended doing, but never quite got round to it.
I don't know what the deal would be with me working in West Africa from time to time though |

Re: Giving Blood
hi all
As someone who uses the end products from all the donations given thru the blood donation scheme run by the national blood service (now nhs blood and transplant) i'd like to say a BIG thank you to all of you that donate. Without the donations that you give i couldn't do my job. Dean
