Are we Hypocrite's?
I don't believe in God. I have tried, to at least look upon religion fairly so as to allow people's own belief's to shine for themselves.
I try. I don't believe in Jesus at all, though some dude prolly did wind up a large group in Galilea once....if I'd been there...I might have done it too. So how come..... how come....? How come...... I am looking forward to Christmas? |

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
There has been some sort of festival at this time of year in many countries. Prior to the widespread arrival of Christianity in Britain it was a Pagan festival. Christians just appropriated it.
I'm a hardcore atheist, but enjoy singing and listening to carols, in fact I love lots of religious music having sung in a church choir as a boy. I see no hypocrisy in enjoying something that refers to something I don't believe in. I am convinced that interstellar travel (by living beings at least) is completely impossible, but that doesn't stop me enjoying (say) Star Trek. |

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
I wouldn't worry about it. Christmas has it's roots firmly based in paganism anyway. The god squads hijacked it and greedy human nature did the rest to subvert anything remotely spiritual about it.

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
Christmas rulez, Jesus sux.
But then Christmas has been seperated from religion for a long time for the average Brit. Christmas is just the bit at the end of the year when you eat more food, drink more drink, buy the kiddiewinks pressies, and watch Only Fools and Horses. The Christmas cards hanging in my living room at the moment have Robins, and Snowmen and Santa on them... no sign of Jesus dieing on the cross. And Jesus wasn't born on the 25th either, so he can do one. The Christians half inched Xmas from other groups, now non-Christians have nicked it to have a bit of a piss up. What goes around, comes around. ![]() Like Rave, I also love Carols and that, love it. I'll happily sing about Jesus with all my heart, I just lose interest a bit when he starts expecting me to believe he was the son of God. |

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
It's not really a hypocrasy to mark a certain day for your own reasons, which is why it's wrong for the PC brigade to ban people from things like handing out Christmas cards or putting up coloured lights on a Christmas tree.
Certain things like setting up a nativity scene, or going to midnight mass would be hypocritical if you didn't believe, but the general mass consumerism that is many people's Christmas is fine. For the record I'm an agnostic as far as I can tell, I believe in the divine but don't follow any specific religion, just go with what I think is right

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
I dunno *shrugs*
I was brought up catholic throughout primary and secondary school and got into LOTS of trouble in the RE lessons due to asking too many questions which the teacher said questioned the existence of jesus and god as well. I even got sent home for asking a question once for the day as the teacher said I was undermining him infront of the class. All I needed was answers to quite a few specific questions. As for now, I reckon we'll all get proof of intelligent beings from another world before we get concrete positive proof that jesus existed and did the things he did. I know a few of you probably don't like the idea of that, but that's my views and I'm sticking to them. As for christmas - it's a good time to spend quality time and have a feasting with the family, and because of todays "24 hour" society this is sometimes the only time ALL the members of a family are going to be together for a few days restbite.

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
I don't think it's hypocritical at all.
I believe in the "dickensian" spirit of christmas, the time for goodwill, singing your heart out, mulled wine and as Lee said... seeing my family as we're not together that often. If we didn't have this once a year, we would run ourselves ragged. I know I would (I have 3 weekends spare in feb at the moment, otherwise I'm booked until middle of march). I am looking forward to having 12 days off in which I only have to be "engaged" for two. I am incapable of believing, so I don't. I am not religious in any way, I don't believe in the divine being... I believe in being treated the way you would want others to treat you and to respect the fact that people believe what they want to believe. Doesn't mean we can't have a few days off here and there... Other countries with backgrounds in other religions still get days off for these Holy days... if you were a christian in these countries, then you'd still get a day off, even if you dont' follow the religion the holiday is for... why should it be any different in Britain. (I vote we have Diwali, Eid, Passover and all the others off as we are a multicultural country - and a national, "I don't believe in a religion, I just like staying in bed" day for all those people like me.)

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
I am a atheist but kind of feel forced into celebrating it due to the family. Its no biggie though - nice to catch up with family etc and of course have plenty of drink. Makes me laugh though how sometimes it seems everybody thinks working life stops today. Most people i know think its strange im not packing up today for Xmas and going back to work next year, but the reality is that allot of people will be working next week - i feel more sorry for those that "love" Christmas and yet have to work while other friends and family are having a "jolly" - i am just looking forward to a week off in January when i can kick back and relax while the "sheeple" return

Re: Are we Hypocrite's?
Hohohoho!
I think its a bit of a shame really that no one has faith in their lives any more.
What we share with everyone is glum, and dark...
