Petrol Prices :angst:
Remember when petrol we up to 80p (or was it 90p) and all the lorry drivers went on strike and blocked the motorways? So they then brough the prices down by 5 or 10 pee.
So, now that the prices are nudging 110p for unleaded (i've seen 113 for diesel) why have there been no strikes? They add congestion charge in London, which has been expanded. And now they've added an emissions charge around the whole city. So, if they are getting more and more money out of the motorist why has fuel prices sky rocketed? Could it be Bushes war in Iraq? Greedy Govt? Where are the strikes? Why are we being punished so much by our own government? |

The government take a fixed tax per litre on fuel. If the prices go up, it's not the government putting them up (although many argue they should absorb some of the cost to the motorist). |

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
There is a little additional VAT as the price rises but, as you say, above the base level of duty levied each year in the budget, it's OPEC et al driving any price rises, not the UK government.

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
Estimates put petrol at £1.50 by end of 2008....
You think its bad now you just wait for it to go mad. Petrol will continue to rise as supplies dwindle and consumption increases. Its only a matter of time before we really will need an alternative.... TiG

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
It sucks how much its gone up. Costing me nearly 60 quid to fill up now.
The problem is I live in a small village and the public transport system from their is awful. to get to work would take me over 2 hours as opposed to 20 minuts it currently takes. |

It's out there. A bacteria culture that rapidly converts left over organic matter into ethanol suitable for combustion engines. Well, I'm guessing it's out there. We just have no idea which students kitchen sink it's living in. |

Prices are way to high now and how do we know this?
Taxi drivers are taking the shortest routes. Things must be bad if this is happening more and more now

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
And it's costing driving instructors too - mine says he wont be around much longer if fuel prices keep increasing.
He only fills up in town now because its cheapest at ~£1.07 per litre. He's had to up his hourly rate too, but only by £2p/h, not in line with his fuel costs or else it would be a lot more! Is there a particular reason the Govt. chuck such a huge tax on Fuel?

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
It also turns out that hybrid cars aren't that good at fuel consumption. But are better for emissions.
So you buy a hybrid and still spend as much on fuel

Re: Petrol Prices :angst:
This rise in fuel prices is not limited just to petrol. Your electricity and gas bill will likely double this year.
The worrying thing is, when these taxy spendy barstards finaly get voted out, there won't be any money left to use to cut tax on fuels. It will all be gone in a puff of PPP and other such silly endevours.
