Its an incredible feat of engineering, what are its uses going to be after the particle tests are completed? or is it purely just to do multiple tests of the same thing?

Ever since I was a kid I've been brought up in the world of science thanks to my dad. I love science, couldn't be without it and will always have some sort of book about the latest thing I find interesting close by. I'm an Atheist and believe that it something can't currently be explained by current scientific understanding and models, it will be in the future.

However, does the LHC worry anyone else slightly?
I'm looking forward to the day its turned on, don't get me wrong....I just hope the planet is still here afterwards so we can try and understand the data they have got

So, i was out on a date this evening, and she asked what I had got up to today.... and i had to explain that i was reading up on the Large Hadron Collider and the possibility of it creating black holes and particles hotter than the sun.... and then had to explain what it was, where it was and erm... i think thats when i lost her.


Its very hard to describe something you have absolutely no idea about to someone who doesn't know what you are talking about.

nothing bad will happen when it works. The amount of energy needed to create any sort of space anomaly that is dangerous to us would be WELL in advance of what we can generate now.

Jay - we couldn't CREATE an anomaly...

they happen anomally.. accidentally... so we could accidentally create enough energy.

The scientists that are going to work down there are way past th e stages of physics... they be working on stuff that until this point has only been theoretical.

So no one knows what is going to happen.

So of course the worst thing possble could happen and we could all be sucked into a black hole.


EDIT: Well... at least... in all the stuff I do at school you don't go out of your way to get Anomalies.

Sometimes I wonder if we are the odd ones or "normal" people are...

I keep on being told by teachers at my school that everyone is special.

They haven't quite realised that, logically, this means that everyone is also normal.

So when I say I'm normal they think I mean I'm not special, but because they are all special and I'm not, I'm special for being normal and they're losers.

Logic is so much fun.



As theres 35,000 people on this website (of whom about 30 people post) I think we can safely say that we are a patch of normality amongst the speciality of the world.

The LHC? Collide particles at really insanely high speeds and monitor the results of the collisions to try and find new sub-atomic particles.

Some people have theorised (and they are only theories) that the collisions will involve such high energies that micro black holes could be created. Leading to one big black hole that destroys us all. Happy days.

But there are plenty of other theories saying it's impossible.
