Large Hadron Collider will change the internet?

necessity is the mother of invention, and the processing power needed for the LHC has led to a rethink of WANs and possibly the internet, read on

It'll probably be capped with a 5GB 'fair use' policy though......

If we find a way to email the mini-black holes they could create maybe that'll put user bandwidth into the negative, thus cunningly avoiding the cap?

So instead of destroying the world by creating anti-matter and minature black holes they've decided to do this instead?

    I suppose that everyone's got to have a side-project.

So, if a bunch of scientists, with a few million quid lying around could pull this off, why are our ISP's with turnovers into the billions fail to complete even a basic upgrade?

Because the majority of ISPs essentially sell someone else's service in one form or another.

For example, most ADSL ISP's are just reselling BT's IPStream. Those that are lucky enough to have a LLU exchange still use copper wires to the home.

Virgin is better - at least they own their own equipment to the door and keep pushing up speeds (if you get it is a different matter though).

The Grid looks like an 'internet' built from the ground up. As it stands, the current internet is frightfully inefficient in what it does. If you start again you can correct these issues.

That and nearly all ISP's don't have scientific research and development premises

So all these ISP aren't secretly making black holes either? There's no fun in life anymore!!!

Being slightly more serious, I completely agree with you.

The internet's mucked up, and needs a slight change. Revolution is good for the air!
Not sure who provides my Internet, but I know my brother is running on Virgin and he's not had any problems with it yet..

Unlike my internet provider who seems to stop my internet more often than I actually have it.

Well, I wouldn't say there was a lack of investment from BT. The 21CN MPLS network is a 10bn project and the cost reductions from moving to a single infrastructure should bring prices even further down a few years down the road. I think the limiting factor as far as home users are concerned is the copper last mile. There simply isn't enough money or demand in the domestic market to justify fibre to the door so I don't think it will happen for a long time if at all.

The other thing I would point out is that these networks discussed in the article already exist today. You can buy 10gb point to point links from BT today and 1Gb MPLS Wan links are already common among business.

of course, didn't you know all caps are inversely proportional to the advertised speed?
all that speed and I bet the upload speeds will still be less than 1mbit.

Surely though, you could get fibre as far as the green box at the end of the street and then leave it up to the home owner if they wanted to pay the additional to have cable run to their home, or perhaps have a point to point wireless connection to replace the wire.

Well, yes its possible to do that but laying fibre has a rather large cost attached to it and home useage is just not going to cover it. I think your point about wireless is closer to the mark, I can imagine a point where mobile broadband overtakes landlines. I mean, just look at what happened to the land line telephone, anybody use one of those these days..?
