    Question Selling Vinyl

Hi guys, I was wondering if anyone has an idea about this. I found a lot of records in the attic, mainly 80's and some early 90's (Soul/Funk/Jazz/R&B), possibly close to 150 records. Is there some special places I can sell them? (apart from the obvious ebay.) and get an idea of how much they could be worth, how much I could sell them for?

I was thinking ebay at first, selling them all together as one deal, but shipping would cost alot? As they are heavy.

It's a mix of singles, and albums...I doubt I'd keep em', although there is some classics in there, and some I have never heard of. But they are mainly beyond my time.

Might get some interest from people after breaks and samples. I'd just stick them on eBay as one lot and just get the buyer to collect, but maybe try find a price guide to see if any individuals are worth any money first

    Evil, evil man......

eBay them as a single auction and just charge the buyer for the postage (or let them pick it up)

Yea, i think i'l probably end up selling them as one auction for collection, or charge them the postage. need to weigh them up later.

    Re: Selling Vinyl

If you approach record dealers, they'll be looking for as near mint copies as possible.

Rare stuff, early releases from popular bands, sleeves with errors on them, changes to a band's line-up, collections from brief careers, 'unofficial' boot-legs or gatefolds with mint condition booklets, original small number run releases with deleted B-sides and of course limited edition picture discs are far more collectible.

The condition of the sleeves is just as important as the condition of the vinyl itself... any wear on either will see the price drop dramatically or even render it of no interest to a dealer.

It's worth googling for local record dealers and dropping in on one by prior appointment.

Only head to eBay once you know what you've got and if it's worth anything but be prepared to find out that majority of them are just landfill waiting to be dumped.

Thanks for your advice Nick, i'll research up as much as i can when i get time.

and yea, i need to look through and sort them properly, from the quick look i did take, most are in ok condition, some are not - and a few sleeves are mixed up.

and there's the odd scratched and broken ones, which i can make a bowl outta lol

    Re: Selling Vinyl

A collector offered me 600 quid for mine as a job lot. I knew they were worth more, so I sold them all individually on fleabay and made over 4 grand.

Looks like I did it at the right time because the bottom quite literally fell out of the market just after I sold them.

You just have to make sure that you make it clear if there are any marks, scratches, scuffs, clicks, pops etc or they will be back moaning.

Don't forget to factor in the cost of your fleabay/paypal fees, a box of record mailers and stiffeners (ooer missus) and the postage isn't cheap for 12" records. £2.50 used to be the going rate for a single 12" with an extra quid for each one thereafter, but that was before the postage went up, so it's best to check out what other people are charging currently.

    Re: Selling Vinyl

I still have a lot of them.

You'll find that all the good stuff goes first and you are left with the stuff that you either overpriced, someone else was selling, or there were a load of bootlegs (**cough**or was just crap to begin with**cough).

About 1500 in total I reckon there was that sold.

I'm not sure if fleabay still charge more for selling items less than a fiver, so on stuff like that, no-one will blame you for a slight overcharge on the postage to make up those fees...apart from maybe fleabay, but they are scoundrels.

    Re: Selling Vinyl

I would use www.discogs.com to check out how much in demand (people add items to a wants list) the vinyl is, or see the current market value that some people are charging using the Marketplace.

Can't remember off the top of my head but I think some people have bought/sold whole collections there as well.

It's pretty easy to sell vinyl on Discogs, you basically add the vinyl to your own collection then say you want to sell it - saves so much listing information - although be sure to get the record catalog number, label, issue etc. information correct.

As for mass postage, one of my mates deals in dance Vinyl collections and swears by http://www.mhdirectcouriers.co.uk/services/ - basically DHL but very cost effective. I've used them for big parcels/heavy items and they're miles better and more reliable than using any other service, bearing in mind this saves you lugging the Vinyl to a post office or other such location by them picking up the package from your location.

    How am I evil?

I would want them to pay for the proper packing materials and insurance to ensure it didn't get damaged in transit.
