| Re: Welsh Channel 4. German? Methought that Vikings were last invaders? And to say German is really a little biased... Include Italian, French, Norweigen and a few others and you MIGHT be getting slightly closer... Originally Posted by chuckskull

Just because the Taffs were here before us, it doesn't make it their land. History is written by the winners. Ask William I. |

The Normans were the last invaders who actually managed to get somewhere, and they were only sort of Vikings. |

| Re: Welsh Channel 4. I'm sorry? The Normans, from Normandy, were FRENCH The Vikings, from Norway, Sweeden and the other country over there were NORWEIGEN, SWEDISH and some other nationality.. Are they the same? And the last invaders mean everything... I'm excluding the Chinese of course... they're more recent and haven't had much influence yet... as the last invaders determine the roots of our language slightly more... These vikings settled, and became the Normans. So they were not French. Not really. And even if you say FRENCH instead of French, that doesn't change. |

| Re: Welsh Channel 4. Talking about Saxons? They were only partly Germanic... some of them came from slightly further east if my memory serves me right... might have been far eastern Germany though.... Not entirely sure. And the Vikings came after the Saxons, but didn't really stay either so don't count I suppose. Forget about the norweigen bit. I forget that Vikings enjoyed pillaging more than tourism... Although they did set up the Danelaw, which was part of England. Which is where we get some of the Viking named villages from in my local area. And Angles/Saxons came in AD410 and stayed. Vikings came in AD793 and stayed from AD865 till they were kicked off by the Alfred the Great, who between AD512 and AD954, leaving behind a legacy of peace for his son... Athelson. AD1009 came and Vikings came back, seeing Athelson the Unready as an easy target. More saxonic money is found in Norway than in England. These Vikings came from Norway.. not Normandy... therefore were Norweigan, not French, and some Norweigan (or their version of it.) And such a nice patronizing tone as well.... You must have been practising. Originally Posted by chuckskull

| Re: Welsh Channel 4. I think its all got a bit confusing. In brief: God makes England. The ancient Britons live there, doing Welsh things. The Romans turn up and take over the gaff. The Romans **** off back to Rome, and leave a power vaccum. Probably one of those Dyson ones with the ball. The Saxons turn up, and live in England, pushing the Welsh out. The Angles come along as well, and get the gaff named after them. Land of the Angles - Angle Land - England. The Vikings raid, taking over parts of the North, the Danelaw. In 1066, it all goes Pete Tong. The Saxons defeat the Vikings at Stamford Bridge, but then the Normans defeat the Saxons at Hastings. Then its today! See? Simple. |

| Re: Welsh Channel 4. Yeah.. I preempted it... French Vikings didn't bother with us... too busy kicking the French to pieces in 911... They do go to England in 1066 though, and argue with the remaining Saxons, and the remaining Vikings. And the Norweigans helped the French, if memory serves, as they wanted part of England. I think the Saxons ended up in Wales? Creating Welsh as well? Some were pushed across into Ireland as well I think, but need to verify. EDIT: He types faster than me? Anyway... History is not simple, it's complicated. And I think that God may not have created England.. that's a matter of personal belief ![]() One that would be shared at the time admittedly... seeing as the Saxons were converted into Christians in the 10th century. | Re: Welsh Channel 4. Nope... The Welsh are German, Norweigan and French The Scots are German, Norweigan and French The Irish are German, Norweigan and French The English are... guess what? German, Norweigan and French. Some Italians in there as well, from AD66 with Julius Cesear and the later expedition in the 2nd century where they stayed till the Saxons came.. I think anyway... I'm not sure that the Irish are actually all that Norweigan or French as the Germans kept them out (Thanks to the handy border) and there's not that many Germans in Wales (as the Normans/French culled them off) Originally Posted by chuckskull

| Re: Welsh Channel 4. The Welsh got pushed over to Ireland by the invading Anglo-Saxons, who were being invaded by the French, who were allied to the Norweigans. However, the Anglo-Saxons had earlier pushed the Celts up into Scotland... The Celts being drifters from an unknown place that spent most their time trying to kill each other.
