Where to live in or around Oxford?
I've just been accepted to study at Oxford University, but before I commit I thought I'd ask here if anyone lives there or went to the university and know's if there is anywhere a bit cheaper to live which is fairly near by, I will have my car if that helps.
To be perfectly honest I'm not totally sold on the idea of going to Oxford yet and the cost of living seems much higher than anywhere else which is really putting me off as I have some expensive years coming up (wedding, house etc..). I'm in Northampton at the moment so a commute isn't out of the question but having driven to the Interview when the traffic was fairly light I can see myself not wanting to do that long term. So, does anyone have any thoughts on living in Oxford? |

Re: Where to live in or around Oxford?
I havn't applied to Cambridge, it wasn't (isn't) an option for me I don't think. Birmingham is next on my list but I can't offically apply there unless I reject Oxford's offer.

Unless Oxford has suddenly taken a downturn (not that it can go much lower) you should be able to get university accomodation for your full time there. Which if you want to integrate is essential because everyone else will be.

Re: Where to live in or around Oxford?
Fair enough, I didn't get much of a chance to talk about it with them on the day, but they havn't offered any yet. It's not for a degree as such it's for a PGCE so it might be different. I spoke to a couple of guys that live a little way a away and they said it was still expensive but better to live in (for reasons unexplained).

Re: Where to live in or around Oxford?
I won't heard a word against the place
It is very expensive though, Cowley Road's the big student area or Jericho if you're a very rich student. Otherwise halls would be your best bet. |

Re: Where to live in or around Oxford?
You won't get much cheap in Kidlington these days, not student cheap anyway. And to be honest getting the bus in every day would be a pain in the arse.

Re: Where to live in or around Oxford?
Well I drove around it at the beginning of the week.. Eugh.. it's almost as bad as london. I have to have my car really I'd be lost without it
Plus I'd be going back to northampton every weekend and some week day nights to see the Mrs so I need to have the car with me. |
