One of the saddest things I have ever read
Seriously. If you are of the easily upset persuasion don't read this. Otherwise I thought it was fascinating, but very, very upsetting.

Re: One of the saddest things I have ever read
Believe it or not that's not as bad as the case of Genie, who was discovered much later in life, never found a settled care home and was in the care of psychologists for part of this who had mixed motivations of caring for her and doing tests on her.
Both are of course terrible and it is sad this sort of thing is possible nowadays.

Re: One of the saddest things I have ever read
It made me wonder that in 2002 they found the same girl, unable to talk, in filthy conditions, wearing a diaper, aged 4... and didn't find the evidence needed to prove neglect.
Makes me sad this.... As for Lanky's example, that sort of abuse is unbelievable and unprofessional and even more saddening.

Re: One of the saddest things I have ever read
Very sad. But this kind of thing is likely to happen more and more often these days. There are a lot of people in this country who are very poor, and people here can be very ignorant and self-involved.

Re: One of the saddest things I have ever read
Just read that in complete silence with an open mouthed, bewildered expression; one of shock, but also intrigue. I look upon it in two ways; firstly the astounding neglect, but secondly the family who have taken her on. It showcases both extremes of human nature (?) - not sure if nature is the right word, struggling to find an alternative - on the one hand neglect and the other a willingness to take on and help such a person knowing full-well the hardships and trials that would undoubtedly result. I hope that they are successful. The human brain is an amazing thing and I hope that this poor girl will learn to adapt and be able to lead some semblance of normality.
These sorts of cases are so outside the norm it's almost beyond comprehension and therefore that shocking. This case and others like it (recent case in the UK of a child being so badly neglected they starved to death) give us a stark contrast of life and our luck or otherwise - each and everyone of us could have been that unfortunate. I'm not a fan of a large state, enquiring into everyone's business, however, it is important that we, as a society, try to look after the vulnerable. Some people just cannot cope and unfortunately this girl has borne the brunt of that inability. I look upon my 14 month old niece, who is bright and mischievous, a right scallywag, strong as an Ox with super curly hair and wonder how anyone could ever neglect such a small child. It is indeed very sad that this happens.

A very similar thing happened in the uk not very long ago. Very sad and this sort of thing happens more often than people think.

Re: One of the saddest things I have ever read
its strange to think that for 7 years noone even knew this girl existed apart from the 3 within the household, even yesterday most of us had no idea that this was happening but the truth is even right now there has to be others out there in the same condition maybe hundreds, but we wont know until too late even on your street something like this maybe happening and have been happening for years but you would have no idea, its very strange and worrying, something has to be done, whether it would be for some service to search an entire house at even the slit hint of low standard of living such as houses where the curtains are brownish yellow, something must be wrong if the houseowner can just let that happen, even if its just the owner is just lazy they must be encouraged to improve there own living standard
