What would you have liked
Right in the next couple of weeks i've got to go to a Primary school and talk about my job (airline pilot) to yr 3-4 (ages 7-9) and i am stumped for ideas. The only thing so far i've thought i could show them is this
so what i'm really asking is if you were age 7-9 and a pilot came to your school what would you like him to talk about to you. There's Forums. And then there's Hexus forums |

Re: What would you have liked
I dunno, talk about what you do on a regular basis I guess!
who you fly with (crew etc), what kind of places you go, how long it takes, what you do up there while flying. what's the best bits what's the worst bits, some funny lil stories? how you felt when you started, and how you feel now. all in easy terms for the kids to understand in a fun way. |

Re: What would you have liked
Stories about unusual things that have happened to you, life saving escapades, or life threatening situations will probably get their attention.

Re: What would you have liked
your not a footballer, so you cant talk about great wins and defeats or anything of that ilk. your going to have to hope none of them have seen topgun and tell them about the time you buzzed the tower and the guy in charge spilled his coffee. then spend the rest of the time making plane noises

Re: What would you have liked
Ok here is a small list:
1) Take a picture of the type of plane you fly. 2) Maybe get a map of the world and mark on it where you to etc 3) I'm guessing you will be wearing your uniform (if not would be a good idea) 4) Talk a little about your average day- e.g what you do before taking off and so on (but i would keep it kinda sort as there only young children) 5) Oh if you can get some freebies from your airline that would go down well! 6) Maybe finish off with a vid like the one you posted, and a q&a bit. |

Re: What would you have liked
I'd take a model of the plane to show what it does - surely most of them will have seen a plane and some may have been in one already, so you can whizz it across their faces, tell them how fast you're going (compare it to an F1 car or something), then say sometimes you can make people's tummy go funny when you takeoff/land.
Maybe do a role play, or ask them lots of (easy) questions - kids like participation. I was going to say you could lift a kids chair with them on it and simulate take-off/landing....but the school probably won't let you do that, and you'd probably be knackered after 2 goes! I think your aim is to be able to inspire kids, so that by the time you're finished they will say to their parents "mummy, daddy, I want to be a pilot!". |

Re: What would you have liked
Don't forget to link your job requirements to the work they do at school.
Stuff like Geography (inclusive of meteorology) will be good to show the kids that various studies can and do have an impact in your career choice. You'll defintely win them over with a quiz and prizes. Oh and definitely make sure that if they want to be pilots to not annoy ground staff...after all, the ground staff keep the plane in tip-top condition for you to fly in.

Re: What would you have liked
Make sure you ask lots of questions to to keep it interactive.
Ask them where they have been on holiday, what they like best about airports / planes. Get them to learn some of the code you have to say to the tower etc and give little prizes to whoever can remember it at the end. The less long bits of talking you have to do the better! quizes are good |

What do you reckon about showing them emergency procedues on FSX as i don't want to put any of them off flying There's Forums. And then there's Hexus forums |
