what mp3 players have you guys and gals got these days?

    Hello,
atm ive got a sony 20gb hard drive player (the one that looks like a bar of soap)
i want a new player. i like the new sony but the max one is 16GB. glad the new sony has drag and drop thou.
i have looked at the cowan iaudio 16gb flash with hdsd card support. link
not sure about the touch screen on it. it even supports flac directly and has a dab radio.
the interface looks a bit basic tbh. kinda bothers me.
i know apple does the touch screen well but not sure about the cowan touch screen.

i want a player at least 16gb hopefully more. decent battery life and hopefully drag and drop.
reason why im posting is to see what mp3 players you have and why you brought that one over others and are you glad you did.
do you need to use itunes to get all the software updates for ipods? or can you download the firmware updates seprately?
btw i got the headphones from the headphones thread and your right they are great!

for doing some software testing im getting a free ipod nano 4gb sent. ill probaly sell it and get a player with the criteria above.
    thanks in advance

Sony NW-A816, why do people need such crazy storage? your never going to listen to all 3000 songs in one outing...

    8-16GB if enough for me

i hate proprietry software for use with an Mp3 player so would never go for an ipod or older sony players for that reason.

Had a Cowon iAudio 6 4GB, which I lost a few weeks ago and replaced with a Cowon iAudio 7 16GB. If you don't intend on watching videos (i.e. not a full on portable multimedia player) then this is a great unit - and it's one of the smallest in its class as well. It can play videos as well, it considers itself a multimedia player, but with the screen so small I wonder why people bother.

I'm not sure why a basic interface bothers you, or do you see that as not having enough options to fiddle about on?

Used to use/still have somewhere a Sony NW-HD5, great little thing 20gb, awesome battery life, Still a very small player even compared to todays offerings, virtually indestructable (fully tested that one!), but used sonic-stage ARGH! thats the main reason/Only reason I fell out of love with it.

Now got an 80gb 'Classic' Pod.

No but it's nice not having to copy/delete files all the time and just create a couple of playlists depending on your mood. And it serves can serve as a handy backup (sure the media stored on the PC should be safer than the ones always on the go, but it doesn't hurt to have an extra backup).

One of the first thing I check if is if it can be used with Rockbox. If it doesn't, I check if it support any lossless format. It's also a big plus if it has a line-out. I am more of a fan of HD based players though, simply because I like BIG capacity.

It's been a good while since I've tested MP3 players though. Last few I tried properly was the Apple 5G iPod, Creative M:Vision and iAudio X5. All good players in their own way, I could elaborate, but they are all pre-touch screen players so I am not sure if things have changed since. In a sentence I would say that that iPod did live up to it's popularity, the M:Vision had the best screen, and the X5 had the worst sceen but sounded great out of the headphone out.

I rarely actually watch the movies I have on mine, but I do listen to them lol The screen isn't bad (on the vision:M) for the occasional movie though

The bulk of my player is movies and tv shows anyway. The shuffle and about 5GB on my Zen are music. That is why I need a lot of storage, I'd happily have 60 -80GB and fill it up to

Its nice to have my whole music collection on my pod, so what ever my mood ive usually got music to go with it, from my quite varied collection! Movie wise, its not too bad to watch films/t.v on if its all ive got, but mostly its nice as StaffsMike said to just listen to videos!

never seen the point in watching movies on mp3 players. screens definatly seem to small.
it is nice to be able to store all my music on the player and listen to whatever i want to.
rather than thinking thats the only cd i didnt put on the unit..

Yes, apart from when I'm trying to sync it to my PC... it's a bit of a hit and miss affair... Grr

    Hello,
i looked at the cowan iaudio 7 at first but then noticed the cowan iaudio D2 16gb flash player, expandible storage, bigger screen and dab radio so i can listen to my fav dab radio station planet rock! on the move.
much better having both in one player.

the simple interface doent bother me that much.
its just that other players have nicer interfaces but without all the codec support and no dab radio.

I don't bother with a dedicated mp3 player any more tbh, for the sake of half an hours music on the bus here and there I bought a 4gb card for my w810i.

Double check if those other players support Rockbox (which adds a fairly extensive list of codec support).
