Dyslexia
I was replying to another member on these other forums i use who rightly so took the mick out of my spelling on an eBay item, I’m 25 years old now and I don’t know my alphabet, I have trouble spelling most words with more than 5 letters and I could not tell you when or how to use the correct versions of words such as ‘there and our’ I have a high IQ and as one expert put it a “wonderfully detailed memory” I have no probs in the verbal sense, my vocabulary is wide and varied but I can’t get the words out of my head onto paper/screen…. But if I was having a verbal conversation it would be a different matter!
I was ‘diagnosed’ with dyslexia...if that’s the correct wording in my teens… although apart from the spelling side of things I must admit having dyslexia is a gift and you will find many self made millionaires and successful business men and women have dyslexia, in my opinion having access to different parts of the brain can give you the edge over other people, but unfortunately on these forums you chaps will only ever see the bad side to it… poor grammar, poor spelling and words in the wrong places! But I can live with it!! I type 95% of my posts in word and then cut and paste but I do find that I often misspell a word that makes another word and that really sucks! And makes you look a prize chump! I’m just typing this now in ms word and I can see a sea of red worms! (hey I got the see and sea right…yeah???) So anyone else here have troubles with the dyslexia? Oh and the biggest joke off all time is having a word like ‘Dyslexia’ as the title!! It must be the hardest word in the whole world to spell!! |

I went out with a girl who suffered from Dyslexia and it was quite bad. She really, really, really wanted to learn to drive but couldn't do the theory test!
Not sure now if there are alternatives though. I do feel sorry for you, but at times I think we all have a brain fart and can't spell things properly.Just don't worry about what other people say. I started a thread ages ago about spelling mistakes but that's just me. I like to spell things correctly but I make mistakes all too often. Though it's mainly through rushing, not inability.

Lysdexia Lures KO!
I have a friend whos son is dyslexic, he had trouble at school and got kicked out for causing trouble, but it was due to frustration. I've heard that dyslexic people think in pictures and colours. But they think up to 100? times faster than non dyslexics. |

i do think that dyslexia is very bad in many respects but i have ALWAYS been very synical of it since a guy i know was diagnosed with very mild dyslexia and so was given all these benefits and given a laptop to use at college and all sorts of other things. It doesnt make sense to spend that much money on someone when there are lots of other perfectly bright kids out there who get none of the benefits and have to make do without..... maybe this is why there are dyslexic millionnairs etc.
Sorry to be so synical and non sympathetical about it but someone has to tell the other flipside dont they. Ben |

Ive got a friend in my year at uni who was diagnosed dyslexic at uni. She failed an essay, the appeal went flat and she then had to regress on the course by six months.... the last time i spoke to her, she had lawyers involved because of discrimination against her. If she had been given the right support and recognition, then the essay would have been passed!
You ever had any problems like this bobby? I have one question tho, that i dont like to ask her for fear of causeing upset over it.... My flatmate is on the same course as me and suffers greatly with dyslexia. How can she be allowed to practice if she is dyslexic? Her handwriting is of a small child, her spelling and grammer is truely awful... poor sentence structure. Any written documentation has to be in such a way that is legilable should it be called for in a court of law. The nursing and midwifery guidelines state this in their record keeping handbook. Although her handwriting doesnt mean she cant recall an event, or document a patients care for her shift because im sure she can... But if this care is ever questioned and her part of documentation is also looked at and the judge cant make head nor tail of what she has written (i often struggle, cos i proof read her essays!) then where does she stand? shes on the course and has got this far without too many problems, but i often wonder how she has been accepted ![]() South Barrule from Cringle Plantation (with a Landy )

One of my friends is Dyslexic. She passed her A-levels with flying colours, Went to Oxford Uni and Passed Law, and now practices as a lawyer. It wasn't until after she finished at Oxford that she was Diagnosed as Dyslexic.

Lynni, your friend needs a scribe. Or just to get one of her nursey mates to make a couple of notes for her. Working in teams always creates better results.

You’re not alone M8*....
I am also Dyslexic and was bulled alot at school for it ... also got into alot of fights over people just taking the piss It's really bad because when im asked like a on the spot Question even if I probably know the answer , my mind just locks up and doesn’t even want to try and find the answer It was very hard @ school, because I was bad @ English and maths.... Like in English if I couldn’t spell a word I would find another word I could spell that would mean the same thing.... LOL But it is true even though I sucked @ maths and English I was Much better than other People in other subjects Like P.E GCSE B, Design and technology (making things with my hands) i got an A* GCSE, I.T. Hardware GCSE B... I think of myself as a very Practical person. I would say I am getting better with my spelling but still use MS Word to check my spelling be for I post... but am getting better.

not wishing to offend anyone here, cos im not meaning to
And im not ranting about flatmate problems either. But do any of you who are dyslexic have an attitude problem? my flatmate who i mentioned earlier in the thread does, she easily gets irritated with people.... we have to hear her opinions all the time, she wont let anything die and i have to say she is one of the nosiest people ive ever met! i only personally realised this over the weekend, trying to spend some quality time with my bf and shes bloody knocking on the door every five minutes!!
