That's something i'm looking for as well because i want linux on my laptop when i get one although all the package kind of deals include XP Home or Pro. That's when it annoys me that the companies put microsoft software on as a standard.
Hey Falcon do you know if Gentoo's latest kernel supports the nForce2 chipset because fedora does not. |

No chance really - what company in their right mind would ignore pressure to bundle windows with their kit?
I doubt you'd make a price saving if you found such a lappy anyway. However, I DO hope that somebody can prove me wrong, as I'm gonna be getting a lappy in a few months and I will be sticking linux (probably MEPIS) on it. |

Gentoo Kernel
I'm not 100% sure but I beleive that the newest Kernel DOES support the chipset. My source is usualy reliable in these sorts of things.
![]() and its not money saving im after, a lot of laptops tend to have a cluase in the warranty that if you change the OS the warranty is void. I dont really want to do that with a 600-800 output on my side. I want to Run Gentoo on it when i get it, not scummy windows. What happened to the laws about bundling software that wasn't wanted by the end user? ![]() [Edit: Spelling Errors, multiple )

Heh, well the version of the kernel in fedora didn't support the 9800 pro or the nForce2 chipset which was a bugger because i couldn't install using GUI mode and when i had installed the grub had some serious issues. If only people concentrated on linux a bit more

Grub...thats gaining a nice reputation atm. I may switch to that after being stumped for around 30 minutes with lilo cos i didnt notice that the default selection was loaded after 1 th of a second. It was ahppening so quick I couldn't see the screen and assumed it wasn't working at all.

www.laptopshop.co.uk any good for your list?
If cars had followed the same developmental path as computers, a Rolls Royce would cost £60, get a million miles per gallon and explode once a year, killing everyone inside.

Computerworld NZ: OS-Free Laptop Draws Interest Mar 10, 2004, 02 :30 UTC (6 Talkback[s]) (2373 reads) (Other stories by Matthew Cooney) [ Thanks to Jason Greenwood for this link. ] "Dick Smith Electronics' test marketing of a laptop sold without an operating system generated enough interest that the company has started placing the computers in its bigger stores. "Electronics buyer Chris Day won't give sales figures but says interest 'exceeded our expectations.' The laptop, featuring a low-heat Transmeta Crusoe processor, 256MB of RAM, DVD-ROM/CD-RW, 30GB hard drive and a 14.1in screen was offered to customers of Dick Smith's website for $1499 [US$1021/€824] including GST..."

at one point dell were selling OS-Less kit ( well they chucked a DrDos floppy in the box I think )
have a look at a re-furb laptop from somewhere like http://www.morgancomputers.co.uk/ - they are generally sold without any OS on them. |

Hmm...A little more than I was hoping to spend...but perhaps now that one model has been successfully sold the proverbial floodgates will open. I'll hang around a month or two before I buy and see what happens.
