£64 ? Hell on earth thats expensive !! Cost us £37 last year to have a wasps nest dealt with in our back garden. All the chap will do is poor in some powder which kills the queen. When the queen dies the workers are a bit angry for a while, and then they buzz off.
Ant powder at the point they are getting in from he outside. They carry it into the nest and...
Where the council's are useful is that they have the applicators that enable them to reach inaccessible places.
I had one in an attic space, the council had a can of something on a long pole that he sprayed (or puffed) round the air brick they were using. Job done. (Can't remenmber how much it cost though, but not much)

A few years ago (and only about 10 mins from our house), a bee/wasp (can't remember which, sorry) nest was sprayed with lighter fluid and lit by someone trying to shift it in their back garden.
It didn't go to plan - they swarmed and went on a rampage, almost killing a passer by. The bloke who did it got into serious trouble for it.
Not too much of an issue if they are inside the house I guess, but keep in mind that the council will have liability insurance - you don't.
As to the worry of smoke and such getting in and damaging the electronics, have you thought about the damage a few wasps could do inside?
Remember they crew wood which they use to build their nests.
Of course you could just wait until winter and let the cold kill them off, assuming the new queen doesn't manage to hibernate and come back next year.
