Why do some people never say "thank you"?

I recently helped out my ex employer with a HUGE business critical issues he had but didn't even get a thanks from him for the effort. (by helped I mean single handedly fixed an issue he and his "team" simply couldn't)

If he ever asked me to help him again I will just say no, but if he had said "thanks" I wouldn't be so harsh. Why is it that some people are like this and others go out of their way to make sure you feel appreciated for going out of your way to help?

Alternatively send him and invoice with showing labour at x hours @ £0.00 and a "Lack of Gratitude" charge at your normal rate

It's bloody annoying and ignorant and, though this could be the Daily Mail in me, it seems to be on the rise.

Take the 'common' courtesy of a nod or a wave - any acknowledgement please - when you let another driver through. That seems to be increasingly rare too. A couple of years ago I pulled over for a large, convertible black, BMW type thing. The driver sailed by without even looking at me, he was too busy chatting to the glamorous blonde in the passenger seat.* It was Jay Kay from Jamiroquai. So he's now forever on The List. Git.

*It wasn't Denise Van Outen, I didn't recognise her whoever she was.

Re: Why do some people never say "thank you"?

Maybe it's just my mercenary nature, but why are you doing free work for a former employer? Do you think they'd give you a bit of free salary just because you asked? Fair enough if it's a 30 second phone call, but really that's what their employees and support contracts are for.

It's just people being a general C word. I hate it when people don't say thanks, absolutely hate it.

    +1 to this !?

I find it weird when people say thanks when they shouldn't, how many times do people do something like hold a door open or move out of your way and then they say 'thanks' - Makes me laugh but then again when it's me you do strangely feel compelled to say it!

To be fair, if my previous boss rang me up and asked for a bit of help, I'd probably give them a hand for an hour or so... no more than that though. On the basis that they've always been very reasonable to me, I'd be inclined to return the favour.

However long it was though, I would always expect them to say thank you for the effort I'd put in.

Some people just don't think like that though - if they've got something for nothing, they just think "nice one, done well out of him" and leave it at that.

Yes - seems to be on the increase. And (I hate to say it) it happens on HEXUS - there is a thanks button but a lot of people don't seem to use it (it needs 25 posts before it appears). I would add that this doesn't apply to any of tghe posters in this thread!

One of my pet peeves too. I was always raised with the "manners cost nothing" attitude and it's paid me dividends over the years.

Also is it me but are the least polite, usually the quickest to demand respect? Usually coupled with a deep lack of understanding as to what the word actually means.

I was also bought up with manners, drives me insane when you allow someone through a door and move out the way and they say nothing!

and yes i think your right, they do demand respect!

... of that. It's because some are rude and ignorant bleeps. They're also stupid, because by being they like. They pretty much guarantee they'll get told where to shove it should they need more help.

As for invoicing him, unless you just want to make a point, forget it. And even if you just want to make a point, it still probably won't work. If he's ignorant enough to not bother to thank you, he'll just assume that the reason you did it was to invoice him and it'll reinforce his own self-deluded world view.

Just learn form it, Jay. The world contain a lot of ignorant and unappreciative bleeps. At least you identified one that you can now avoid in future. And the other lesson .... if you do something expecting thanks, all too often you'll be disappointed. So either learn to not expect it, in advance, and be pleasantly surprised when you do get thanked, or prepare to be frequently disappointed.

Re: Why do some people never say "thank you"?

Some people are just rude and ungratful by nature, others don't know they're doing it. I used to work with something who falls into the former. He asked me to do a certain job and then report back to him when it was done, did I get a "Thanks for that Simon"

Did I hell, he'd just say "Ok" and walk off.

Still I don't work there anymore so its no longer my problem, still gets me angry everytime I think about it though.
