"A group of cars was doing 140-160km/h (85-100mph)," an unidentified eyewitness told Japanese broadcaster TBS.

    Yeah sure...

I was making this point to Guy last week, but I think it applies here equally.

People equate noise with speed. I have a BMW 5 Series (e39 530i) and I get devilish looks from people if I'm in second doing 30mph, but who probably wouldn't have batted an eyelid had I been doing 40mph in fourth. Noisy = fast in the general public's perception. And the 5 is rather quiet, which is a shame I feel.

So, a convoy of Ferraris? Of course they were doing quicker than they probably should have been, but I doubt the accuracy of the person commenting above, unless they were aided by a calibrated speed measurement device.

As to someone having a poor Christmas? Yes, that'll be the various insurance companies that foot the bill for the carnage, not, I suspect, any of the individual drivers.

Or perhaps the witness was doing 85-100 him/herself?

I'd agree with you. I've seen people angrily motion me to slow down in a 40 zone on the roadside when going 40 in a sports car before (there was nothing in the road, so they weren't signalling anything other than my speed).

Having said that in relation to this article, the chap crashed while changing lanes. Hardly taxing work for a high performance vehicle between "85-100 mph" so that's why I don't believe they were going that slow

There is also the 'cock effect' whereby a man driving a Ferrari in a crowd of other Ferraris will act a bigger cock than he usually is. He may just have been trying to pass by dummying left and then darting
    right and misjudged it.
