    Odd text message...

Just got a text from a number that begins _+08712

    it says:
"please call *number that sent text* immediately as there is an urgent message waiting for you."

now i'm thinking 'scam' - basically i reckon if I cal it it's gunna charge me £5 a minute to listen or whatever. But on th off chance its not bad has anyone any idea what this is/where it came from? My numbers fairly new so i havnt listed it on any services that may obtain my number yet

0871 is national rate number which means depending on telecom provider the person being called will probably make a cut of the phone call. Lots of scammers are using this method as there are new laws relating to unsoliced messages asking you to call premium (09068 etc) numbers. You'll get charged up to 50p a minute depending on your mobile provider to call the number, and will probably be told to call back on an 09068 number. Ignore it.

They prob go through every mobile number in order. I know that is the only way they can get my mobile number, as I never give it out to anyone except friends/family.

    Definite scam

I got a text message the other day from a random woman telling me to stop chasing after her man because my relationship with him is now over...

I could have added fuel to the fire with a nicely worded reply but nah that would have been a bit mean

I wish telco's were forced to put a 15 second delay with a message that the following call is charged at £x.xx/minute, and if you hang up within that first 15 seconds there is NO charge.

Seems there are thousands of people getting scammed this way every month.

They can't send messages anymore saying call a 0906 number, so they get you to call a local rate number where a message is played to phone a 0906 number.

Suckers... (replace the S with a letter of your choice from F, F, F or F)

As mobile phone numbers are sequential, they will just blitz blindly across a range.

In our office we got a load of Nokia 6210's on Orange contracts a couple of years ago, all our numbers ran in perfect sequence - occasionally you will hear a phone go off with an SMS or an attempted data connection... then it will stop and the next person's will go, then the next, and so on through all our numbers.

What really sucks is that telco's charge for putting blocks on certain numbers for you, if they do it at all - it should be a free service.

try not to give your mobile number out on web sites or when you ring up a company for 'tone' they just pass your number around and scam people, think of how many kids must fall for this all the time
