Using laptop as motion sensing security cam / padlock question

I was wondering if there is a software that could allow a laptop to function as a motion sensing camera. Basically, as soon as there is movement (but only if there is movement), it would starts snapping pictures and send them to an email of my choosing. A free option is preferable.
Also, how strong can a padlock be? Can it at all compare to the lock on a door?

Re: Using laptop as motion sensing security cam / padlock question

No idea on the motion sensing software, but with regards to a padlock, some of them can be tougher than your typical front door lock, if for no other reason than they don't have to rely on pieces of wood (e.g. the door frame) to keep things together.

For example, a BS rated padlock, attached to a proper armoured hasp, fixed with 4" bolts to a metal container is a damn sight tougher than a Euro cylinder

Re: Using laptop as motion sensing security cam / padlock question

I think you'd need some kind of IR sensor. It could probably be done in software using the camera(constantly shooting and only saving when it detects movement), but I don't know of any software and it sounds a bit to niche to exist tbh. You might be better of looking into security cameras they aren't that expensive these days, cheaper than a good padlock even.

Re: Using laptop as motion sensing security cam / padlock question

As mentioned you're probably better off with a dedicated security camera. My dad had one that could connect to your wireless network and it would record video clips when it detected motion and email out videos to him. Luckily all he ever got were videos of the postman and various animals. I can't remember the cost, but I think it was around £100 and this was a few years ago.
I don't mean to sound cold, or cruel, or vicious, but I am so that's the way it comes out.
