So, last week Sally said "why don't you get back into ham radio" :)

    tee hee.

Anyway, I've been lusting after a nice little short wave receiver for a year or three now, so I put a request into my local Freegle (similar to Freecycle).

Local radio ham replies that he has a radio I can have but I would need to be strong !

    Thinks : AR88, RA17, No 19, HRO ????

Any of you Gs think of any more ?

Aye, thats another ... and one of my all time fave's the 1155 !

I actually rebuilt a 1155 during 1973 when I was at college as part of my practical. Had the 1154 there too....

As a ham radio enthusiasts son, sadly these numbers mean nothing to me.

I can remember my dad having things such as Yaesu FT 200 and 101 ZD's and I think He;s still got A Kenwood TS830S tucked away somewhere.

The 520 is the baby to the 830 from what my old man says.

Yep, its still a full 200 Watts PEP on SSB !

And even though it's an ancient unit now, it still commands several hundred quid from what I've seen. Two in USA ebay right now at a ton each with days to go

I know very little about Ham radio or the use/Purpose of it but, I know my neighbour is a ham enthusiast as there is a big Yagi antenna in his garden.

    On Freegle?

Bite his hand off before he comes to his senses. I mean, the G5RV is really neither here nor there, them being pretty cheap anyway, but the 520 is a sweet set, especially at that "price".

Well, the purpose is pretty much what you'd expect .... talking to like-minded people all over the planet, and even those not on the planet.

I mean, there's a huge range of niches, like slow-scan TV, microwaves, ultra-low frequency, data services (packet radio), and so on, but the core of it is talking to people on the radio .... a bit like chatting on a forum but with actual voices.

I'll have to get back into HR myself. Ain't done much since my half g5 fell down having been fastened to the chimney with plasic tie wrap which snapped due to uv. Aye you'll have a lot of fun with that 520 David.

I certainly did bite his hand off Saracen, at the shoulder ! Without doubt the MOST generous thing I've ever had off Freegle !!

It's now safely ensconced in the office which is going to have a serious makeover....

I also have the ATU to go with the G5, and a dinky little Uniden VHF/UHF scanner and 2m HB9CV 2 ele Yagi :

    Oh the memories

Re: So, last week Sally said "why don't you get back into ham radio" :)

Another former CB user here, but am interested in radios and have a couple of scanners, and a portable shortwave receiver that I need to get to grips with. Have dabbled with receiving data using the scanner, and decoding using a PC (via soundcard). Main use was monitoring aircraft using ADS-B.

Ifff your visiting Bletchley Park at any point, the Radio Society of Great Britain have a section there, with a live demonstration. Its partly responsible for my decision to get a shortwave field radio.
