looks like zotac's website was just hacked

On my laptop here as I'm running anti-virus/spyware scans on my pc.

I just tried to go to the zotac website only to get redirected and an "anti-virus" program started running.
Looks like the zotac site got hit to link to site that ran a fake AV.
I quickly pulled the network cable, killed firefox, the plugin manager and I found the "random string of letters".exe that was the fake AV


Just double checked on my laptop and google's link to zotac.com just redirected back to google and now zotac.com is working again.

been a long while since something like that hit me, hope my pc is clean.

I run avira personal for active protection, spybot for passive and manual scans and malwarebytes for manual scans
bit worrying that avira didn't catch it.


does house call just detect or does it also cleanup? been a while since I used one of the official online scans and it only did detection not cleanup.
granted you could note down the files then reboot into safemode and manually delete them.

malwarebytes stomped all over it and scrubbed it btw, took ages to run because it was clashing with avira's active protection, turned off the active protection and the malwarebytes scan speed doubled.

Avira is one of the top handful of av progs when it comes to detection rates. But as far as I know - if you're using the free version it doesn't scan for all types of malicious and annoying files. That's why I've switched to the free version of Avast which has greatly improved it's detection rates lately. Also for an on demand scanner - Emsisoft (formerly A-Squared) Anti Malware is great!
