Nice one, Zak. At work, we have different passwords for different applications and access. And, all have differing expiry timeframes.

And there's a very good reason for that. Sure, it's inconvenient but how many times do people have to be told not to use the same password for everything?

I had a rant at our county council the other day because as well as email password security (90 day expiration, 8+ characters, upper and lowercase, numbers, and symbols and distinct from the previous passwords all required as well as a grid card) the same is being introduced on all the admin PCs over the holidays (minus the grid cards).

Not everyone will be able to remember their passwords, and certainly not after a 6-week holiday. Email isn't too bad as you can store the details in your (theoretically relatively secure) documents, but you can't do this for login details for the PC, so less-savvy users (those who don't have encrypted databases on their phones perhaps) will be either writing down their passwords or sharing them with each other...

It's getting so bad that systems are now so secure that security itself is in danger of being compromised.

For some reason they've as yet declined to give me a response to that little rant.

Except by using real words you've reduced the entropy.

http://arstechnica.com/security/2013...r-passwords/3/ is a good article of the state of matters last year.

But that is 11 bits per word, so assumes the word will be in a miniscule dictionary of 2048 words. Even a daily mail reader knows more words than that.

Fundamentally when Radix in that article says "This is an answer to the batteryhorsestaple thing" he is miles out. He got lucky with a password turning up because according to his dictionary that is two words plugged together not 4. With that many hashes to play with, a long shot becomes a one off certainty, and if he used a reasonable size 65000 word dictionary then that was only 32 bits he was searching.

The hard part with that method is getting 4 unrelated but memorable words. I'm sure by now someone will have found that people still have a selection bias eg generally including a name or mostly the words are objects thus removing half the entropy in the common case. But if the words are chosen properly at random then it remains a powerful idea. All this numeral and digit stuff is crud again thanks to human nature of how people will tend to apply it in the common case.

If you are suggesting made up words are harder to crack then I am sure you are right, but again that is harder to remember.

Re: Changing your password in Windows when it's connected to a work server

Interesting results throwing in different combinations in the websites below. NOTE - Don't use any of your real passwords. The sites might be innocent but it's really not wise to put your password anywhere online where it doesn't belong.

    http://www.passwordmeter.com/

    https://howsecureismypassword.net/

Incidentally, the four 'random' word approach does yield far higher scores than a 'more random' but shorter number, letter, punctuation type.

The rest of your Windows registration key?

Back in Win95 days I used to know an OEM licence key off by heart after installing it so many times on test PCs in the store I worked. Would make a good password now.

Re: Changing your password in Windows when it's connected to a work server

Its more important to remember the reason Windows is being so helpful is because someone configured the server that way, its only doing what its been told to do.

The fact that it doesnt tell you the password policy is, quite honestly, bizarre.

When we set up a new domain, using Server 2012 Essentials, theres a helpful slider that sets the password policy between something like none, low, medium and high.

It doesnt even tell you on the server what those settings entail though!
