    Question Any readers here?

    Hi all,

I am currently getting our department to buy in some books for our S1-S3 English pupils (I think that is Year 7-10 in England).

Our current books are extremely old and I prefer to teach newer books. Due to this I try to keep away from Mice and Men etc as they are taught to death. Getting new books allows us to develop more stimulating lessons. Currently we have ordered:

    • Harry Potter Book 1 - Good for the younger pupils
    • The Ghosts of Heaven - Marcus Sedgwick

I am now looking for a third and final book to get. Any good recommendations?

It would be good to get a nice fantasy book? Preferably not over 350-400 pages?

    Thank you,

    Mark

I loved The Borribles when I was 10. Though it's not a new book it's a great one.

    Re: Any readers here?

I still stand by some of the classics, myself.

I don't know what the modern equivalent is, but from 1st to 5th year of Secondary School (age 11-16) We had:

    - To Kill A Mockingbird
    - Tess Of The D'Urbervilles
    - Journey's End
    - Animal Farm
    - Hamlet

Unofficially, we also studied The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings, but that is only because our English teacher was one seriously cool dude - He taught us to write in Elvish!

    Re: Any readers here?

    2nd on Artemis Fowle.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld? He does some for younger readers, Maurice and his Amazing Educated Rodents, Wintersmith etc...

Sorry, it's The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.

The 'Young Discworld' books would be good for yrs 7-8 before introducing the older kids to the 'full-blown' series...

+1 to Garth Nix! I've only read the Keys series of books but there was marvellous and truly imaginative. And a good heap of feel-good friendships.

Another one potential worth reading is the first Eragorn book. Little bit longer and more towards the top of your age group but some classic fantasy. Think Game of Thrones (PG version, but still plenty of gritty fighting) with a clearly defined big bad gets turbo'd up on magic.

    Re: Any readers here?

Not 'newer' exactly, but what about a change of pace ..... Asimov's 'Robot' series. Not too long a read on their own, but plenty of meat for discussion, ethics of robotics, modern AI relevance, etc.

In other words, on one level, a good read. On another level, get 'em thinking, debating, etc.

Life of Pi - it's a bit longer than 400 pages I think.
Phillip Pullman - Golden Compass etc. Film was weak but the books were OK I think.
Sophie's World - sort of fantasy educational philosophy

They should absolutely read Sophie's World, but not as a literary study, or perhaps even at that age. As an introduction to philosophy when they're a bit older it's excellent though.

Colour of Magic - Terry pratchett

I enjoyed the phillip pullman books, Golden compass etc.

The good thing about both these would be that if the kids enjoy them there are other books in the series to read in their own time.

The hunger games might be a good choice as well with the films being out?
