Question Watching content from my PC through from my TV via DVI to HDMI cable?

If I get a DVI to HDMI cable and plug the DVI portion into the output of my video card and plug the HDMI portion into the back end of my HDTV. Will this project what I have on my monitor onto my TV. I want to watch the content I have stored on my portable hard drive on my TV.

If I do all this will I be able both see and hear from this one DVI to HDMI cable through my TV?

DVI doesn't have sound so you'll only get video. Depending on the age of the video card it may have an HDMI out anyway, but that may or may not have sound.

I have a Sapphire Vapor-X R9 290. What about a Display Port to HDMI then. DP from GPU to HDMI in the back of my TV?

Just use the HDMI out on the video card to the HDMI in on the TV, then go into the control panel for your video card and set up how you want the screens to act (Mirror, Extend Desktop etc)

I run a 5 meter HDMI from my card (GTX570) to my TV and mirror my desktop, I usually just have to change the output device on my sound to the TV.

Some graphics cards do output audio over the DVI as well as video when using a DVI>HDMI cable.

I have had the most luck with newer nVidia cards but as usual YMMV!

Interesting, will this depend on not just the graphics card but the TV supporting it as well?
I'm going to assume my TV is far too old being a '09 model - but I will give it a go on my 980, it didn't work with my 680 or 770.

No, it's completely dependant on the gfx card.
