Well I was out with my grandson once and it was a public footpath and thought this lot wouldn't move out of the way easily, also they had calves and I didn't want to upset them. Anyway we decided to use the lower bit by the stream to pass them using our bikes as a shield in case one tried to head butt us and we could jump across the stream in an emergency.

i'd say you did the right thing by making yourself big and making lots of noise, whilst they're naturally curious creatures they can be scared off but you have to be mindful that scaring them can make the situation worse if the whole herd is running in all different directions. my experience comes from cows that are in the middle of nowhere with no public footpaths so they will generally sprint the entire length of a field to get a good look at you as they're not used to people walking through their fields. the fact that they stopped before reaching you seems to me that they were just being curious and not being aggressive but it can be a very worrying situation when you don't know what they're going to do. perhaps the cows in Wales are less aggressive then their counterparts in Leicester as by reading your account if they'd have gotten this close you wouldn't be here to tell your story

Glad I'm not the only one! Was real worried this forum took a dark turn for a second.
