Thumbs down Facebook Connect no longer supported on Windows devices

    More details here:

As a Windows Phone user this is terrible news for me because I've been syncing all my events and contacts between the services and it was handy to have one calendar that had everything on it. Also I'll not be able to link contacts and emails with Facebook profiles which was very useful in decluttering my contacts list. Does anyone have any insight into why this happened? Does it affect Android and iOS too?

Says in the story that Facebook changed the API, so there's your why. If they've decided to keep it closed, or decided they want big money for companies to use it (which is likely the case in today's environment) then there's your other reason - and it will probably affect both Google and Apple as well. Google is big on buying things - licensing not so much. And Apple is as reliant on the availability of the API as MS is.

This one is literally on Facebook.

Apart from it depends entirely on which features Microsoft is having problems with and what kind of notice they had to sort it out. They might still be using v1 of the API, which was dropped on 30th April this year. They might simply be using a feature that's now in the 30 day deprecation list (although I can't see anything in that that would stop the features they're using working). However you cut it, I suspect MS *could* have updated their products to work with a newer version of the API, had they chosen to do so.

Reading https://developers.facebook.com/docs/graph-api it doesn't look like facebook drop unannounced changes on the developer community very often, and they give reasonable notice e.g. the v1.0 deprecation had a 1 year lead time. I've also not noticed any announcements from Apple, Google, or indeed Blackberry to suggest that their facebook-integration services are about to fall over.

So I'm not convinced it's fair to lay this one entirely at facebook's feet...

EDIT: reading around, I think the register has the best take on this (they've actually put some thought into their article rather than just rehashing MS's announcement): http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/06...icrosoft_apps/
