Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

Its good it has ended with Clarkson, Hammond and May it really needed to.
They were good up until about 2008/9 with the main show but always liked the specials except for the Patagonia one.
The current format had become too scripted and you could predict the outcomes and various parts felt staged.
They really struggled to fill 10 shows with much entertainment and the news portion should have been thrown away long ago. At least they got rid of the Cool Wall, it was a total waste of time.

The writing was on the wall when they did that god awful cringe worthy pre-show with Christian O'Connell.

The BBC have made a brash decision with a new host because its such a money earner they cant afford the downtime. But they haven't thought it through at all by hiring Chris Evans.
I find him hard to listen to or watch. I hate being forced to listen to R2 in the mornings at work, he drives me spare.

Indeed. At this point I'm struggling to find real things to say on the matter because I'm just curious. It could go either way and I would like to see it and form my opinion on experience rather than it be predetermined.

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

I listen to his radio show. I tolerate it rather than enjoy it but it's less blood-pressure raising than radio 4 and I'm too old to like what radio 1 plays these days. I wouldn't choose to watch him on Top Gear if he makes it like his radio show - which is verging on 50% jingles and lashings of drivel with him gabbling at his cohorts about stuff they clearly don't know about.

    Same here!

I turn off R2 when Sara Cox(?) Stands in for him. Confession time with Simon Mayo on the drive home is very good sometimes. If you can stand SM then CE is actually pretty decent.

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

I'm a fan of Top Gear, but was getting a bit tired of the same old over scripted routines. Maybe this is the refresh it needs.

For me I would be happy with Chris Evens, Guy Martin and Jodie Kidd. I think that would be a great line-up!

You know I actually prefer SC as she plays more music (she has time too as she doesn't bother with strings of BS jingles.)

Re: Chris Evans new Top Gear host ....

The BBC have made yet another huge mistake IMO - they just have just let the show die out. They could come back as something else, but keeping the top gear name without the most important 3 parts is a bit silly. I can see why from a business sense - globally the top gear brand is (was!) worth a fortune, but if they were thinking with a business brain they would never have sacked Clarkson, that was an emotional decision not a logical one.

I won't be watching the new show - I am looking forward to the last 2 "proper" top gear episodes (Or 1 if they are edited together) now that we know they will be broadcast, and then that will be that. Until the 3 of them create a new show...new Brainiac maybe?

I don't usually hope for failure, but in this case I do hope the ratings are awful and that the BBC are forced to drop this after one season.

Seemed to work when they relaunched it with Clarkson, May and Hammond.

I wouldn't go that far. With CE involved, it holds zero appeal for me, and I won't bother even giving it a try, but if it's shown and viewers like it, even if they're largely different viewers, then good for the BBC.

Why would you want a show that you've yet to see, fail? What is so inherently offensive about Evans, or the BBC keeping the Top Gear name going that makes you feel that way? How do you know you won't like it?

And correct me if I'm wrong, but you seem to be criticising the BBC for making what is in your opinion an emotional decision as opposed to a business decision in sacking Clarkson, but then acknowledge that keeping the Top Gear brand going forward is the sensible business decision, yet criticise them for that as well anyway.

He says he ruled himself out because he didn't want to be used as a pawn in a situation involving three of his friends - He gets on very well with the TG trio apparently.

TBH, I couldn't stand him back in the Don't Forget Your Toothbrush/TFI Friday days, and I was dead against him taking over the breakfast slot on Radio 2. I was wrong on that last part though - he's done alright IMO.

He's a massive petrol head and he loves Top Gear - I wish him well.

    Oh yeah, that was it.

Did you catch the TFI Friday "final episode" last Friday? I wasn't too keen, it seemed a bit self-indulgent on Evans' part but could have a been a genius move. He was hinting at the show coming back with Nick Grimshaw at the helm. Not sure I'd tune in for that, but could be good for a young target audience.

I'll definitely give the new-generation Top Gear a chance - although I'm not a petrolhead by any stretch of the imagination - along with any new projects that crop up from the Clarkson-Hammond-May trio.

Well, they changed the format from a fairly dry motoring magazine show into a really fun entertainment show with a link to cars. That format worked really well for many years, and found huge success around the world, entirely because of the presenters. The same can be said of the vast majority of their other shows, especially when they are on them together.

It *could* work out well for the BBC, attracting a different crowd..but it's very rare for an established show to take on an entirely new cast and continue the same success, so the jury is out. I am thinking much more of worldwide sales btw - not the UK market. Personally I think it will tarnish the brand rather than help sustain it.

Why would I hope for failure? Perhaps its a little strong, but I strongly feel that the BBC went way over the top by sacking Clarkson (wonder what they would have done without the media peer pressure?), and that success of a new re-imagined Top Gear would help make the case that they were right to do what they did.
