Re: Are online forums a dying medium?

I think this format of discussion is here to stay, but the format in which we use it is changing. Reddit is basically a huge forum, with sub forums and threads and replies and discussions. Discuss is a great forum style platform that to me feels a lot more user friendly than the traditional style of forum format.

And yet I and I imagine some others much prefer forums to Facebook because while it is essentially a forum, the kind of stuff that gets posted to it is generally useless other than if you follow news sites like PCGamer etc on it.

i think Facebook is a dumbed down, less glorious thing than a Forum, rather than glorified.

"sitting have coffee with my friend, lol" or "in Tesco, pls kill me" would be removed as spam here.

Facebook is really not much more than an interactive news feed with built in ICQ abilities. Well, it's also an ad-pushing junk mail delivery system, too, but ABP and Ghostery do a good job of killing that. I'm not sure I would consider it a forum, or even forum-like, in the stricter sense of the word.

Re: Are online forums a dying medium?

I don't view it as a dying medium, but as one with growing competition for our free time online. FB etc. may be very different from forums (I think they are too apple and orange to claim that one is a glorified or less glorified version of the other), they are yet another means a person could choose to spend their time online. Some people may enjoy discussing and debating with strangers online, others may enjoy playing games, others may enjoy watching videos of cats or other things, yet others may enjoy chatting on IM, using Twitter/Facebook, reading the latest tech news etc. Most of us probably engage in several of the aforementioned and more, but few of us have enough time to do everything. With more choices, each option will need to settle with a smaller share, and with forums being one of the older format, it has more to lose then other medium.
