Just shows how fortunate we aren't in the eurozone, but it's the result of the Greece Germany game being played out in Greece today that will be really interesting.

Back to the football, was there a reason that the game changer Aluko wasn't used in the previous match?

I genuinely don't know how anyone can sit through an entire women's football match. In terms of ability and skill sets, it is absolute rubbish and. Anyone who can last 120 minutes of that is a better person than me.

And before anyone jumps down my throat for being sexist, I would same the same about any sport played that badly by anyone, male or female.

Depends what you're after. Parents can watch their kid's games with interest. That's even worse quality.

I can imagine a few reasons people would watch - They love the sport football that they'll watch it in any shape or form, they want to support women's football, they want to support the national sides no matter what...

As long as someone has some sort of interest then it's watchable.

No trees were harmed in the creation of this message. However, many electrons were displaced and terribly inconvenienced.

Parents watching kids sports is a given – It's only been a few weeks since I watched the eldest compete in the 'Spud 'n' Spoon' race at school. (3rd).

As for the rest of it, I know why they watch it, I just don't know how. But I was being sincere when I said anyone that can is a better person than me. I'm not sure the product on display warrants the media attention it has been getting, but that's another story!

If you're comparing it to the top professional men's game then yes ability and skills are in short supply. But in my opinion it is a more honest game and you can see the effort players put in which I can appreciate.

I wasn't comparing it with anything, just judging it on it's own merits. It seemed, by and large, a lot of punting the ball up field and a lot of bomb-scare defending. I have no doubt they were trying hard, and certainly wouldn't question their effort, but as a sport I fail to see why it has been given the coverage it has in the media, apart from trying to piggyback on the popularity of the mens game. If it encourages more girls to participate, then that is a good thing but let's call a spade a spade - it's pretty dire.

agreed standard is more division 2 than premiership but I enjoyed watching the games I did. The france-germany game in particular. And credit to the girls for 3rd place. Good effort! Given the difference in money between the two genders, is the gulf in class really that surprising?

I would say a decent semi pro mens team would comfortably beat the national ladies, but comparing against the men isn't really what I meant. There's no money in women's hockey, but the skill sets are good. Same for netball. Even women's rugby is decent, but the football is poor.

Hey, we all like different things, that's what makes life interesting.

I think the media coverage reflects that girls/women's football is the fastest growing female sport in the UK, and the message that was repeated over and over was Inspire.

The relatively poor state of women's football can in part be down to the FA, they effectively banned it between about 1921 and 1969; it's likely to take another generation before it gains parity at grass roots level.

    Re: England 1: Germany 0 :-)

The German team was banned until 1970 and they haven't done badly since. He says on a thread titled as this. So to back it up with facts, before this World Cup they were the No1 ranked team, they have won the World Cup twice - back to back, and have won the European Championship the last 6 times, 8 in total.

England have a long way to go to match the top teams technically, but you can say that for both the men's and women's team.

I think calling it div 2 quality is being quite generous.....

It's akin to watching Sunday league football, which is a total shame as it's a World Cup! I guess that until it's taken seriously in schools and parents are actively backing their kids to play it, it's never really going to get any better.

Although saying that, they all seemed to perform better than Micronesia

    Re: England 1: Germany 0 :-)

I would disagree with a lot of these comparisons. I recall watching a woman's premier league game a couple years ago and I physically laughed out loud when a lady went to kick a ball and it come off their shin... but on reflection this often happens in the men's premier league, i have seen top player miss open goals, and failed to connect for a simple tap in.

I started to watch this world cup, with low expectation and I was pleasantly surprised. Obviously not all of the games in the world cup was a good representation of skill level throughout the womens game, which is again similar to the mens game, not all team entry's are of the same quality of the top seeds (comon.... Greece have managed to win the Euro!)

Although the skill level is no where near of the mens, i find their matches more entertaining, due to the desire, work rate and teamwork the womens team display, which is a breath of fresh air compared to a lot of pre-madona's in the premier league. None of these women are getting paid 250k+ per week at the club level, so their want to win major tournaments is not diluted because of pay disputes.

I get the distinct impression that the women's team want to win for the love of the game, not money. If you could transplant just 20% of the genuine desire, work rate and teamwork from the womans team to the mens england team we would surely be on course for a major tournament trophy in the near future.

I haven't watched any women's football so far, but I am a bit curious. I mainly want to know is if the sportsmanship is better (less of the diving and trying to play the ref).
