Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

    Hi all,

i bought a 2nd dell 2407 monitor from gumtree and after trying to use thinking brilliant after an hour or so it just goes blank with power and becomes unresponsive. i have tried different inputs and PC/PS4 and same issue

do i have any repercussions? we tested this at the train station with his laptop and of course cant test for an hour to see the fault.

i only have his name (he tested with his laptop and this was the name to log on..) and his car reg number.

instead of buying two brand new monitors i bought a 7 year old monitor and now paying the price even though these are brilliant monitors! UH!

absolutely nothing as you bought sold as seen, known issue with those as I had 2 refurbs like that back when they were in production before throwing my toys out the pram with Dell to get a new one. Spares will be hard to come by as I have an old one sat for spares with an inverter thats on it's way out ready for the inevitable. Probably not worth paying for repair boards as it is so old. chuck it on eBay spares or repairs?

Might be worth investigating the issue on google to get the right parts as it is still an outstanding monitor.

thanks gonzo, the guy did reply but seems to putting the blame on me not accepting any responsibility.

those parts are really expensive wow! think i may just have to accept this and buy another 24inch screen NEW this time and it does look like a common fault after the power button coming loose..

Shame your not closer to Derby, I would have taken it off you for spares at the right price to revive my 2nd one.

Hardware older than 3 years is a bit of hit and a miss.
Speak to a No win No Fee solicitor to get your money back. But, if you paid less thna £100 , I am afraid you are looking at a loss.

Re: Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

Strange that it goes wrong after an hour.

Normally with screens it is either capacitors or inverters.

Run a movie or something which moves a lot and then when it goes black get a nice brought torch and shine it up close at an angle to see if you can see the pixels changing. If there is still a picture then is an inverter or possibly capacitors around out. Inverters you can often get from eBay on China for a couple of quid. Get the number off the ones inside.

Either way when you pop it open look for bulging caps even a sight bulge means it had gone off so to speak. Often the ones around the power supply are the ones to go. Especially ones which are about 470uF to 1500uF and about 16v to 24v. If you buy replacements get the next voltage up so they last.

I suspect inverter as I had one that did something similar but it also had bad caps in too.

Re: Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

I'd be surprised if a no-win, no-fee solicitor would take this. After all, what can they realistically expect to make out of it?

As for what you can do, not much, I suspect. If it's Gumtree, presumably it's a private sale. And if it's a private sale, about all you can expect from the seller is that, first, they have a good title to the goods so are able to sell them, and second, that the goods comply with any description, and that any statements made are true. Other than that, it's 'caveat emptor' - let the buyer beware. Which essentially means the onus is on the buyer to ask all relevant questions, and conduct a thorough examination hefore buying.

My old law lecturer (a QC, later quite a senior judge) used to say "when buying a horse, walk round and check there's a leg on each corner. Because if you find out later that there isn't, neither you nor your new horse will have a leg to stand on."

It might be a little inaccurate biologically, but it's pretty much on the money legally.

And even if it does fall foul of "not as described", though in theory you may have a case (small claims) you need to be sure you can get money out of the seller, because take it from me, winning the case and actually getting your money back aren't necessarily the same thing.

Re: Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

My first thought was that it might be faulty capacitors. Googling does show several mentions of the 2407 developing faulty caps.

It's not that difficult to replace capacitors. If you aren't keen on doing this yourself but are okay with disassembling the monitor to confirm which (if any) caps are faulty, then if I have some spare I'd be happy for you to send me the board and I'll change the caps for you if you pay the return postage cost.

Re: Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

Hmm. Can't see anything obvious, unless I'm missing something? Sometimes I miss obvious things though... Someone else might see it.

Could you take another couple of close-ups of the big capacitor, showing the top & bottom. The stuff I googled previously showed leakage where the pins attach to the cap.

Perhaps the caps might still be problematic though. Further diagnostics would need to measure voltages & ripple etc. I'd still replace at least just the big cap, given the history of this model elsewhere.

Also worth checking the back of the board too.

Re: Gumtree - faulty monitor bought any thing i can do?

    Hmm
I also don't see any obvious bad caps.

Also take close ups at angle as even a slight bulge means they are bad.
The 5 smoothing caps top right of the fat boy are typically the ones to go.I have never come across a faulty fat boy one myself.

Also the green caps next to the copper inverters are worth taking a close look at.that's a lot of inverters as well.

The board that has the dvi connector I have never seen go either.

First of I would do the torch test as it would tell you if the power board is okay and the dvi board too.

Try just reseating the cables also.
