    Premium Bond winners

I love seeing which stranger has won what on their Premium Bonds.

It gives me a strange sense of "right".

This month, someone for Manchester with only £23 of bonds in total won £5,000 on a £1 bond that they bought in 1971
    That would make ANYONE smile
    £5,000 5DN331891 £23 Greater Manchester £1 Jul-71

and someone in Herfortordshire who bought one batch of £500 of bonds, (all bought at once) in 2004... won £50,000!
    £50,000 6HJ562295 £500 Hertfordshire £500 Apr-04

2 people per month win £1m. Both holders to win this month were higher bond holders, and ironically both were bought in 2011
    £1,000,000 181XE611069 £11,524 South West Wales £5,200 Jun-11
    £1,000,000 180AV204733 £26,425 Overseas £10,000 Apr-11

    http://www.nsandi.com/prize-checker

I buy £100 per month, every month, and have done so for ... a long time now. I'm winning £25 pegularly now, but it's still not quite made me as much back as if I'd paid my mortgage off at an extra £100 per month over the same period.

    Anyone else into bonds?

    I love them.

For the dude who won £50,000 with the 11 year investment of £500 ... that's a proper investment

    Re: Premium Bond winners

I won £25 once, on my £100 in bonds. Did end up buying more, but cashed in most of them to help buying a car. Got £200 now, and never won anything else. My mum had like 2 or 3 bonds for over 50 years and never won a prize.

I do really like having them, it's a bit of fun with that nice pipedream of getting the knock on the door at the beginning of the month from "Agent Million".

I'm the same as you though, I like to look at the winners list occasionally and it really makes me happy when someone with not much wins a nice prize.

    Re: Premium Bond winners

MSE pretty much put me off this as anything but a bit of fun.

something as much as 85% i think it was would be better put into as high interest savings/current account.

but no doubt it would be lovely to win 5k or even a hundred out of the blue ... bit like the lottery but you keep the stake

    Re: Premium Bond winners

About 3 years ago I bought £1000 and managed to win £25 within a year, so was better off than in a regular saving account! I then started to use them as a savings account once I had filled my ISA quota as the interest on normal saving accounts were so dire, it was worth the punt. Only won the odd £25 with them though.

However, I now have an offset mortgage, so my money goes into that, but I have still kept some just on the off-chance...

Exactly, I don't think anyone with any sense thinks that they are a good investment, but it is fun and that's exactly how I treat it, like a permanent lottery ticket.

    Re: Premium Bond winners

On the checker my bonds bought in 1969 say "invalid number"..it seems the only way to check if I've won anything or have the right address is to register by posting details to Glasgow and go from there...surely in 2015 I should be able to check my bonds without this inconvenience.

    Re: Premium Bond winners

I sold £12K of Premium Bonds to use as part of my deposit for my first house. I was never impressed when they dropped the minimum prize down to £25. The best wins I have had were £125 on the £12K and £500 on a £100 block in 1985 - Unfortunately, being naive, I invested that in a crap all-in-one Hifi.

Now my finances are settling down, I may start investing £50/month - Darn! Just realised they have raised this to £100 per transaction.

Can anybody confirm that this applies to Standing Order purchases?

    Re: Premium Bond winners

Supposedly, and I say that because I haven't verified it and it could just be a myth, you stand a better chance of your bonds winning if they're "young", rather than sitting on a growing pile.

Assuming that were true, you'd be better off buying some, sitting on them for 6 months, sell them and buy more.

That said, I bought £500s worth a few years back, won something within 3 months and not a thing since.

That's an urban myth - If you did that you would lose 1 to 2 months of chances to win....

I tinker with it - it's a bit of fun and spreads around the risks.

I often get £25 wins - nothing bigger yet.

Apparently, less a myth and more a perception thing.

Because there are more new bonds, compared to pre-1994 bonds, they appear to win more often.
Id also suspect that in recent times, people buy more bonds, so more chances.

    Re: Premium Bond winners

Well you get next to no interest with rates being so low at the moment,
may as well put money in bonds and get zero interest *but with the chance of getting big wins*

(a single £25 win on a £1000 holding per year would beat most high interest accounts)

I've thought about investing in them a few times, once I get rid of my debt I will invest I think.
