    Need helping finding/buying a Capacitor

    Hi Guys,

I have a dehumidifier that has died - the fan has gone. I'm guessing it's the capacitor for the fan and want to replace it but I'm struggling to find a place to buy one online.

I have the original here removed:

    Ovey CBB65
    6.5uF +/-5%
    450VAC
    50/60Hz
    SH P2
    40/70/21

I'm not knowledgeable enough to know if a slightly different spec will serve the same purpose so I'm trying to match the specs exactly.

Is anyone with knowledge in this area able to tell me with certainty whether or not an alternate spec will do and any suggestions on where I can get one?

The original looks very similar to this one (they're out of stock, though), except for what looks like a nut on the top (mine is just smooth and flat on the top) and the two connectors on mine are the same but one of the connectors on that one seems to have four connection points (doubt that matters):

    Thanks.

Please tell me you know what you are doing / don't have a weak heart.... These things can jolt you, so I really wouldn't recommend playing with it.

You need to just get a good polypropylene capacitor with the same capacity (6.5uf) if you try putting a different one in, you will potentially damage the motor as this is a motor run capacitor.

Best bet is something like RS or Farnell. How do you know the capacitor has failed?

Re: Need helping finding/buying a Capacitor

As has been said, are you sure it is the capacitor? Do you know what you are doing?

That said, the one you have found is fine - the bolt is for mounting purposes.

The voltage is critical must be at least 450V, the value slightly less so so long as it is within 10%

    otherwise

    http://uk.rs-online.com/web/p/polypr...itors/4515540/ (6.8uF _+ 10% so no problem)

    or
http://uk.farnell.com/epcos/b32332i6...d=700000005410 - slightly higher value, but should be OK.

The purpose is usually to give a split phase for an induction motor running on a single phase supply.

As long as the slightly different spec is only slightly higher, it shouldn't be an issue. And by slightly, we're talking less than 5%.

This looks to meet your guidlines - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Motor-Capa...-/271854047392 - to a tee, including the description of your connectors.

What kind of load do these motors generally have? As 6.5uf to 5uf is quite a big difference!

Now for the real question, what with it being almost 10 years since I've needed this knowledge can I remember the equation without my Art of Electronics book (or google!)

Dehumidifiers - not much. The rest of the range, which for this particular cap family is astounding, going all the way out to industrial freezer compressors, is very high.

The google results I got using his specs started at the exact cap he described, and was only available on the UK Ebay site and Alibaba, but that took a LOT of digging to find, and I don't have a large amount of faith in that particular company. Everything else I found was US based, and started at no lower than 10uf - well outside that 5% high side. The obvious preference would be for an exact copy, which I'm pretty sure we found (would be good if the OP would comment), but on those extra rare occasions when I've gone down to component level on appliances, I've found 5% is usually within spec, although I leave things with compressors to the professionals.

For those interested in the theory

    http://www.allaboutcircuits.com/text...uction-motors/

I think the OP's motor is the the permanent split capacitor motor, essential a two phase motor with the capacitor giving the phase shift. As I mentioned earlier, the value of the capacitor is less critical than the voltage, and 450V wig is the minimum for UK 240V use.

Re: Need helping finding/buying a Capacitor

Sorry for the delay in replying - I've got family visiting from abroad and am on here less frequently at the mo.

I appreciate all the input though!

To answer you, Animus, I'm not sure it's the capacitor, it's actually more likely the fan motor itself, however, the work involved in getting to the fan/motor is a stretch too far, so since the cap was more easily accessed and not expensive I figured I'd try it and if it doesn't do the trick I'll scrap it.

I've not worked with caps this big but I'm aware of the risks and hopefully have the sense to be careful.

Re: Need helping finding/buying a Capacitor

Sorry to jump on an old thread but I came across this thread searching for the same capacitor. It is actually the compressor capacitor for a Delonghi DES16E. I was also considering the RS Components option although it's rating is 6.8uf not the 6.5 I was looking for. I know the capacitor is bad because everything works except the compressor and on taking the back off, there is oil dripping from the cap.

Shame I can't post a link to the photo

In the end I couldn't get hold of one. I just ditched the unit. Hope you find what you need.

There's an electrical company in Coventry called CAPSS who might be worth a phone call, no website I'm afraid.
